New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
As the time drew near for his return to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.
He sent messengers ahead to a Samaritan village to prepare for his arrival. 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him;
But they were turned away. The people of the village refused to have anything to do with Jesus because he had resolved to go to Jerusalem. 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem.
When James and John heard about it, they said to Jesus, "Lord, should we order down fire from heaven to burn them up?" 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them ?"
But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them,
So they went on to another village. 56 and they went to another village.
As they were walking along someone said to Jesus, "I will follow you no matter where you go." 57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."
But Jesus replied, "Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but I, the Son of Man, have no home of my own, not even a place to lay my head." 58 Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."
He said to another person, "Come, be my disciple." The man agreed, but he said, "Lord, first let me return home and bury my father." 59 He said to another man, "Follow me." But the man replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."
Jesus replied, "Let those who are spiritually dead care for their own dead. Your duty is to go and preach the coming of the Kingdom of God." 60 Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
Another said, "Yes, Lord, I will follow you, but first let me say good-bye to my family." 61 Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say good-by to my family."
But Jesus told him, "Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God." 62 Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."
