New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Several days later Jesus returned to Capernaum, and the news of his arrival spread quickly through the town. 1 A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home.
Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there wasn't room for one more person, not even outside the door. And he preached the word to them. 2 So many gathered that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them.
Four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. 3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them.
They couldn't get to Jesus through the crowd, so they dug through the clay roof above his head. Then they lowered the sick man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus. 4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on.
Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, "My son, your sins are forgiven." 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven."
But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting there said to themselves, 6 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves,
"What? This is blasphemy! Who but God can forgive sins!" 7 "Why does this fellow talk like that? He's blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?"
Jesus knew what they were discussing among themselves, so he said to them, "Why do you think this is blasphemy? 8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, "Why are you thinking these things?
Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man, 'Your sins are forgiven' or 'Get up, pick up your mat, and walk'? 9 Which is easier: to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up, take your mat and walk'?
I will prove that I, the Son of Man, have the authority on earth to forgive sins." Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins . . ." He said to the paralytic,
"Stand up, take your mat, and go on home, because you are healed!" 11 "I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home."
The man jumped up, took the mat, and pushed his way through the stunned onlookers. Then they all praised God. "We've never seen anything like this before!" they exclaimed. 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, "We have never seen anything like this!"
