They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. 1 They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.
And when he had stepped out of the boat, immediately a man out of the tombs with an unclean spirit met him. 2 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet him.
He lived among the tombs; and no one could restrain him any more, even with a chain; 3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain.
for he had often been restrained with shackles and chains, but the chains he wrenched apart, and the shackles he broke in pieces; and no one had the strength to subdue him. 4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always howling and bruising himself with stones. 5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and bowed down before him; 6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.
and he shouted at the top of his voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me." 7 He shouted at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear to God that you won't torture me!"
For he had said to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!" 8 For Jesus had said to him, "Come out of this man, you evil spirit!"
Then Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" He replied, "My name is Legion; for we are many." 9 Then Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "My name is Legion," he replied, "for we are many."
He begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. 10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
Now there on the hillside a great herd of swine was feeding; 11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.
and the unclean spirits begged him, "Send us into the swine; let us enter them." 12 The demons begged Jesus, "Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them."
So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the swine; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and were drowned in the sea. 13 He gave them permission, and the evil spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
The swineherds ran off and told it in the city and in the country. Then people came to see what it was that had happened. 14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.
They came to Jesus and saw the demoniac sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the legion; and they were afraid. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
Those who had seen what had happened to the demoniac and to the swine reported it. 16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man--and told about the pigs as well.
Then they began to beg Jesus to leave their neighborhood. 17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by demons begged him that he might be with him. 18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.
But Jesus refused, and said to him, "Go home to your friends, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy he has shown you." 19 Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you."
And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed. 20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
