New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
When Jesus went back across to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him on the shore. 21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.
A leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, came and fell down before him, 22 Then one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came there. Seeing Jesus, he fell at his feet
pleading with him to heal his little daughter. "She is about to die," he said in desperation. "Please come and place your hands on her; heal her so she can live." 23 and pleaded earnestly with him, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live."
Jesus went with him, and the crowd thronged behind. 24 So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him.
And there was a woman in the crowd who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.
She had suffered a great deal from many doctors through the years and had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she was worse. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.
She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched the fringe of his robe. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,
For she thought to herself, "If I can just touch his clothing, I will be healed." 28 because she thought, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed."
Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel that she had been healed! 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
Jesus realized at once that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?" 30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?"
His disciples said to him, "All this crowd is pressing around you. How can you ask, 'Who touched me?'" 31 "You see the people crowding against you," his disciples answered, "and yet you can ask, 'Who touched me?' "
But he kept on looking around to see who had done it. 32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.
Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and told him what she had done. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.
And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. You have been healed." 34 He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering."
While he was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from Jairus's home with the message, "Your daughter is dead. There's no use troubling the Teacher now." 35 While Jesus was still speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. "Your daughter is dead," they said. "Why bother the teacher any more?"
But Jesus ignored their comments and said to Jairus, "Don't be afraid. Just trust me." 36 Ignoring what they said, Jesus told the synagogue ruler, "Don't be afraid; just believe."
Then Jesus stopped the crowd and wouldn't let anyone go with him except Peter and James and John. 37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.
When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw the commotion and the weeping and wailing. 38 When they came to the home of the synagogue ruler, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly.
He went inside and spoke to the people. "Why all this weeping and commotion?" he asked. "The child isn't dead; she is only asleep." 39 He went in and said to them, "Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep."
The crowd laughed at him, but he told them all to go outside. Then he took the girl's father and mother and his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying. 40 But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child's father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.
Holding her hand, he said to her, "Get up, little girl!" 41 He took her by the hand and said to her, ""Talitha koum!"" (which means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!").
And the girl, who was twelve years old, immediately stood up and walked around! Her parents were absolutely overwhelmed. 42 Immediately the girl stood up and walked around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished.
Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone what had happened, and he told them to give her something to eat. 43 He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
