Revised Standard Version (RSV) New International Version (NIV)
And the Pharisees and Sad'ducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. 1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.
He answered them, "When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather; for the sky is red.' 2 He replied, "When evening comes, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,'
And in the morning, 'It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 3 and in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.
An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah." So he left them and departed. 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah." Jesus then left them and went away.
When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. 5 When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread.
Jesus said to them, "Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sad'ducees." 6 "Be careful," Jesus said to them. "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
And they discussed it among themselves, saying, "We brought no bread." 7 They discussed this among themselves and said, "It is because we didn't bring any bread."
But Jesus, aware of this, said, "O men of little faith, why do you discuss among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? 8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, "You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?
Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 9 Do you still not understand? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?
Or the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?
How is it that you fail to perceive that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sad'ducees." 11 How is it you don't understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sad'ducees. 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
