New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' So he is the God of the living, not the dead." 32 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob' ? He is not the God of the dead but of the living."
When the crowds heard him, they were impressed with his teaching. 33 When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.
But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees with his reply, they thought up a fresh question of their own to ask him. 34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together.
One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question: 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:
"Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?" 36 "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"
Jesus replied, "'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.' 37 Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'
This is the first and greatest commandment. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment.
A second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' 39 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'
All the other commandments and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments." 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."
Then, surrounded by the Pharisees, Jesus asked them a question: 41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
"What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?" They replied, "He is the son of David." 42 "What do you think about the Christ ? Whose son is he?" "The son of David," they replied.
