"For it is just like a man going on a journey. He called his own slaves and turned over his possessions to them. 14 "Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them.
To one he gave five talents; to another, two; and to another, one-to each according to his own ability. Then he went on a journey. Immediately 15 To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey.
the man who had received five talents went, put them to work, and earned five more. 16 The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more.
In the same way the man with two earned two more. 17 So also, the one with the two talents gained two more.
But the man who had received one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground, and hid his master's money. 18 But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money.
"After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. 19 "After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.
The man who had received five talents approached, presented five more talents, and said, 'Master, you gave me five talents. Look, I've earned five more talents.' 20 The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.'
"His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful slave! You were faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Share your master's joy!' 21 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'
"Then the man with two talents also approached. He said, 'Master, you gave me two talents. Look, I've earned two more talents.' 22 "The man with the two talents also came. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.'
"His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful slave! You were faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Share your master's joy!' 23 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'
"Then the man who had received one talent also approached and said, 'Master, I know you. You're a difficult man, reaping where you haven't sown and gathering where you haven't scattered seed. 24 "Then the man who had received the one talent came. 'Master,' he said, 'I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed.
So I was afraid and went off and hid your talent in the ground. Look, you have what is yours.' 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.'
"But his master replied to him, 'You evil, lazy slave! If you knew that I reap where I haven't sown and gather where I haven't scattered, 26 "His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed?
then you should have deposited my money with the bankers. And when I returned I would have received my money back with interest. 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.
" 'So take the talent from him and give it to the one who has 10 talents. 28 " 'Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents.
For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have more than enough. But from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 29 For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.
And throw this good-for-nothing slave into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'
