New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Then Jesus brought them to an olive grove called Gethsemane, and he said, "Sit here while I go on ahead to pray." 36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."
He took Peter and Zebedee's two sons, James and John, and he began to be filled with anguish and deep distress. 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled.
He told them, "My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and watch with me." 38 Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."
He went on a little farther and fell face down on the ground, praying, "My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will, not mine." 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."
Then he returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter, "Couldn't you stay awake and watch with me even one hour? 40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter.
Keep alert and pray. Otherwise temptation will overpower you. For though the spirit is willing enough, the body is weak!" 41 "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."
Again he left them and prayed, "My Father! If this cup cannot be taken away until I drink it, your will be done." 42 He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."
He returned to them again and found them sleeping, for they just couldn't keep their eyes open. 43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy.
So he went back to pray a third time, saying the same things again. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.
Then he came to the disciples and said, "Still sleeping? Still resting? Look, the time has come. I, the Son of Man, am betrayed into the hands of sinners. 45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
Up, let's be going. See, my betrayer is here!" 46 Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"
