New Revised Standard (NRS) New International Version (NIV)
A jealous and avenging God is the Lord, the Lord is avenging and wrathful; the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries and rages against his enemies. 2 The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD takes vengeance and is filled with wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on his foes and maintains his wrath against his enemies.
The Lord is slow to anger but great in power, and the Lord will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. 3 The LORD is slow to anger and great in power; the LORD will not leave the guilty unpunished. His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and clouds are the dust of his feet.
He rebukes the sea and makes it dry, and he dries up all the rivers; Bashan and Carmel wither, and the bloom of Lebanon fades. 4 He rebukes the sea and dries it up; he makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither and the blossoms of Lebanon fade.
The mountains quake before him, and the hills melt; the earth heaves before him, the world and all who live in it. 5 The mountains quake before him and the hills melt away. The earth trembles at his presence, the world and all who live in it.
Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and by him the rocks are broken in pieces. 6 Who can withstand his indignation? Who can endure his fierce anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; the rocks are shattered before him.
The Lord is good, a stronghold in a day of trouble; he protects those who take refuge in him, 7 The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him,
even in a rushing flood. He will make a full end of his adversaries, and will pursue his enemies into darkness. 8 but with an overwhelming flood he will make an end of [Nineveh]; he will pursue his foes into darkness.
Why do you plot against the Lord? He will make an end; no adversary will rise up twice. 9 Whatever they plot against the LORD he will bring to an end; trouble will not come a second time.
Like thorns they are entangled, like drunkards they are drunk; they are consumed like dry straw. 10 They will be entangled among thorns and drunk from their wine; they will be consumed like dry stubble.
From you one has gone out who plots evil against the Lord, one who counsels wickedness. 11 From you, [O Nineveh, ] has one come forth who plots evil against the LORD and counsels wickedness.
Thus says the Lord, "Though they are at full strength and many, they will be cut off and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more. 12 This is what the LORD says: "Although they have allies and are numerous, they will be cut off and pass away. Although I have afflicted you, [O Judah, ] I will afflict you no more.
And now I will break off his yoke from you and snap the bonds that bind you." 13 Now I will break their yoke from your neck and tear your shackles away."
The Lord has commanded concerning you: "Your name shall be perpetuated no longer; from the house of your gods I will cut off the carved image and the cast image. I will make your grave, for you are worthless." 14 The LORD has given a command concerning you, [Nineveh]: "You will have no descendants to bear your name. I will destroy the carved images and cast idols that are in the temple of your gods. I will prepare your grave, for you are vile."
Look! On the mountains the feet of one who brings good tidings, who proclaims peace! Celebrate your festivals, O Judah, fulfill your vows, for never again shall the wicked invade you; they are utterly cut off. 15 Look, there on the mountains, the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace! Celebrate your festivals, O Judah, and fulfill your vows. No more will the wicked invade you; they will be completely destroyed.
