One day a petition was presented by the daughters of Zelophehad -- Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. Their father, Zelophehad, was the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Makir, son of Manasseh, son of Joseph. 1 The daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah. They approached
These women went and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the tribal leaders, and the entire community at the entrance of the Tabernacle. 2 the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly, and said,
"Our father died in the wilderness without leaving any sons," they said. "But he was not among Korah's followers, who rebelled against the LORD. He died because of his own sin. 3 "Our father died in the desert. He was not among Korah's followers, who banded together against the LORD, but he died for his own sin and left no sons.
Why should the name of our father disappear just because he had no sons? Give us property along with the rest of our relatives." 4 Why should our father's name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father's relatives."
So Moses brought their case before the LORD. 5 So Moses brought their case before the LORD
And the LORD replied to Moses, 6 and the LORD said to him,
"The daughters of Zelophehad are right. You must give them an inheritance of land along with their father's relatives. Assign them the property that would have been given to their father. 7 "What Zelophehad's daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father's relatives and turn their father's inheritance over to them.
Moreover announce this to the people of Israel: 'If a man dies and has no sons, then give his inheritance to his daughters. 8 "Say to the Israelites, 'If a man dies and leaves no son, turn his inheritance over to his daughter.
And if he has no daughters, turn his inheritance over to his brothers. 9 If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers.
If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father's brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father's brothers.
But if his father has no brothers, pass on his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan. The Israelites must observe this as a general legal requirement, just as the LORD commanded Moses.'" 11 If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to be a legal requirement for the Israelites, as the LORD commanded Moses.' "
