Lexham English Bible (LEB) New International Version (NIV)
Now I want you to know, brothers, that {my circumstances} have happened instead for the progress of the gospel, 12 Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.
so that my imprisonment in Christ has become known in the whole praetorium and to all the rest, 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ.
and most of the brothers, trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment, dare [even] more to speak the word without fear. 14 Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly.
Some even because of envy and strife preach Christ, but some also because of good will. 15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill.
The latter [do so] from love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel. 16 The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.
The former proclaim Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, thinking to raise up affliction in my imprisonment. 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.
{What is the result?} Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in this I rejoice. But also I will rejoice, 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,
for I know that this will turn out to me for deliverance through your prayer and the support of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 19 for I know that through your prayers and the help given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.
according to my eager expectation and hope, that I will be put to shame in nothing, but with all boldness, even now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether through life or through death. 20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.
For to me to live [is] Christ and to die [is] gain. 21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
But if [it is] to live in the flesh, this [is] fruitful work for me, and which I will prefer [I do] not know. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know!
But I am hard pressed {between the two options}, having the desire to depart and to be with Christ, {for this is very much better}. 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;
But to stay on in the flesh [is] more necessary for your sake. 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.
And because I am convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
so that [what] you can be proud of may increase in Christ Jesus because of me through my return again to you. 26 so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me.
