Revised Standard Version (RSV) New International Version (NIV)
Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a man who is perverse in speech, and is a fool. 1 Better a poor man whose walk is blameless than a fool whose lips are perverse.
It is not good for a man to be without knowledge, and he who makes haste with his feet misses his way. 2 It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way.
When a man's folly brings his way to ruin, his heart rages against the LORD. 3 A man's own folly ruins his life, yet his heart rages against the LORD.
Wealth brings many new friends, but a poor man is deserted by his friend. 4 Wealth brings many friends, but a poor man's friend deserts him.
A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who utters lies will not escape. 5 A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who pours out lies will not go free.
Many seek the favor of a generous man, and every one is a friend to a man who gives gifts. 6 Many curry favor with a ruler, and everyone is the friend of a man who gives gifts.
All a poor man's brothers hate him; how much more do his friends go far from him! He pursues them with words, but does not have them. 7 A poor man is shunned by all his relatives-- how much more do his friends avoid him! Though he pursues them with pleading, they are nowhere to be found.
He who gets wisdom loves himself; he who keeps understanding will prosper. 8 He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; he who cherishes understanding prospers.
A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who utters lies will perish. 9 A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who pours out lies will perish.
It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury, much less for a slave to rule over princes. 10 It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury-- how much worse for a slave to rule over princes!
