King James Version (KJV) New International Version (NIV)
The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him. 1 The sayings of King Lemuel--an oracle his mother taught him:
What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows? 2 "O my son, O son of my womb, O son of my vows,
Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings. 3 do not spend your strength on women, your vigor on those who ruin kings.
It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: 4 "It is not for kings, O Lemuel-- not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer,
Lest they drink , and forget the law , and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted . 5 lest they drink and forget what the law decrees, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights.
Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish , and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts. 6 Give beer to those who are perishing, wine to those who are in anguish;
Let him drink , and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more. 7 let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more.
Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. 8 "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.
Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy. 9 Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."
