My child, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments; 1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,
for length of days and years of life and abundant welfare they will give you. 2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity.
Do not let loyalty and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. 3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
So you will find favor and good repute in the sight of God and of people. 4 Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.
It will be a healing for your flesh and a refreshment for your body. 8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
Honor the Lord with your substance and with the first fruits of all your produce; 9 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;
then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
My child, do not despise the Lord's discipline or be weary of his reproof, 11 My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent his rebuke,
for the Lord reproves the one he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights. 12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
Happy are those who find wisdom, and those who get understanding, 13 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding,
for her income is better than silver, and her revenue better than gold. 14 for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.
She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. 15 She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.
Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. 16 Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.
Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. 17 Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called happy. 18 She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed.
The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens; 19 By wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place;
by his knowledge the deeps broke open, and the clouds drop down the dew. 20 by his knowledge the deeps were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.
My child, do not let these escape from your sight: keep sound wisdom and prudence, 21 My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight;
and they will be life for your soul and adornment for your neck. 22 they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck.
Then you will walk on your way securely and your foot will not stumble. 23 Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble;
If you sit down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. 24 when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Do not be afraid of sudden panic, or of the storm that strikes the wicked; 25 Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,
for the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught. 26 for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared.
Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it. 27 Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act.
Do not say to your neighbor, "Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give it"—when you have it with you. 28 Do not say to your neighbor, "Come back later; I'll give it tomorrow"-- when you now have it with you.
Do not plan harm against your neighbor who lives trustingly beside you. 29 Do not plot harm against your neighbor, who lives trustfully near you.
Do not quarrel with anyone without cause, when no harm has been done to you. 30 Do not accuse a man for no reason-- when he has done you no harm.
Do not envy the violent and do not choose any of their ways; 31 Do not envy a violent man or choose any of his ways,
for the perverse are an abomination to the Lord, but the upright are in his confidence. 32 for the LORD detests a perverse man but takes the upright into his confidence.
The Lord's curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the abode of the righteous. 33 The LORD's curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous.
Toward the scorners he is scornful, but to the humble he shows favor. 34 He mocks proud mockers but gives grace to the humble.
The wise will inherit honor, but stubborn fools, disgrace. 35 The wise inherit honor, but fools he holds up to shame.
