New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
"Write this letter to the angel of the church in Laodicea. This is the message from the one who is the Amen -- the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation: 14 "To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation.
"I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish you were one or the other! 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!
But since you are like lukewarm water, I will spit you out of my mouth! 16 So, because you are lukewarm--neither hot nor cold--I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
You say, 'I am rich. I have everything I want. I don't need a thing!' And you don't realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. 17 You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.
I advise you to buy gold from me -- gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich. And also buy white garments so you will not be shamed by your nakedness. And buy ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
I am the one who corrects and disciplines everyone I love. Be diligent and turn from your indifference. 19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent.
"Look! Here I stand at the door and knock. If you hear me calling and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal as friends. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.
I will invite everyone who is victorious to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my Father on his throne. 21 To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.
Anyone who is willing to hear should listen to the Spirit and understand what the Spirit is saying to the churches." 22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."
