Revised Standard Version (RSV) New International Version (NIV)
For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by men and hating one another; 3 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.
but when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared,
he saved us, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,
which he poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior,
so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life. 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.
The saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. 8 This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.
