1 Corinthians 11

NAS 1 Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ. NIV 1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. NAS 2 Now I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you. NIV 2 I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the teachings, just as I passed them on to you. NAS 3 But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ. NIV 3 Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. NAS 4 Every man who has something on his head while praying or prophesying disgraces his head. NIV 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. NAS 5 But every woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying disgraces her head, for she is one and the same as the woman whose head is shaved. NIV 5 And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head--it is just as though her head were shaved. NAS 6 For if a woman does not cover her head, let her also have her hair cut off; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her cover her head. NIV 6 If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head. NAS 7 For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. NIV 7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. NAS 8 For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man; NIV 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; NAS 9 for indeed man was not created for the woman's sake, but woman for the man's sake. NIV 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. NAS 10 Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. NIV 10 For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head. NAS 11 However, in the Lord , neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. NIV 11 In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. NAS 12 For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and all things originate from God. NIV 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. NAS 13 Judge for yourselves : is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? NIV 13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? NAS 14 Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, NIV 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, NAS 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering. NIV 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. NAS 16 But if one is inclined to be contentious, we have no other practice, nor have the churches of God. NIV 16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice--nor do the churches of God. NAS 17 But in giving this instruction, I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better but for the worse. NIV 17 In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. NAS 18 For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and in part I believe it. NIV 18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. NAS 19 For there must also be factions among you, so that those who are approved may become evident among you. NIV 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God's approval. NAS 20 Therefore when you meet together , it is not to eat the Lord's Supper, NIV 20 When you come together, it is not the Lord's Supper you eat, NAS 21 for in your eating each one takes his own supper first; and one is hungry and another is drunk. NIV 21 for as you eat, each of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else. One remains hungry, another gets drunk. NAS 22 What! Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? In this I will not praise you. NIV 22 Don't you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you for this? Certainly not! NAS 23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; NIV 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, NAS 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me." NIV 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." NAS 25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." NIV 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." NAS 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. NIV 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. NAS 27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord . NIV 27 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. NAS 28 But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. NIV 28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. NAS 29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly. NIV 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. NAS 30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep. NIV 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. NAS 31 But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. NIV 31 But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. NAS 32 But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world. NIV 32 When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world. NAS 33 So then, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. NIV 33 So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for each other. NAS 34 If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that you will not come together for judgment. The remaining matters I will arrange when I come. NIV 34 If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment. And when I come I will give further directions.
