1 Corinthians 11:17-34

RSV 17 But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse. NIV 17 In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. RSV 18 For, in the first place, when you assemble as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you; and I partly believe it, NIV 18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. RSV 19 for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized. NIV 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God's approval. RSV 20 When you meet together, it is not the Lord's supper that you eat. NIV 20 When you come together, it is not the Lord's Supper you eat, RSV 21 For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal, and one is hungry and another is drunk. NIV 21 for as you eat, each of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else. One remains hungry, another gets drunk. RSV 22 What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not. NIV 22 Don't you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you for this? Certainly not! RSV 23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, NIV 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, RSV 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." NIV 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." RSV 25 In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." NIV 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." RSV 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. NIV 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. RSV 27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. NIV 27 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. RSV 28 Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. NIV 28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. RSV 29 For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself. NIV 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. RSV 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. NIV 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. RSV 31 But if we judged ourselves truly, we should not be judged. NIV 31 But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. RSV 32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are chastened so that we may not be condemned along with the world. NIV 32 When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world. RSV 33 So then, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another-- NIV 33 So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for each other. RSV 34 if any one is hungry, let him eat at home--lest you come together to be condemned. About the other things I will give directions when I come. NIV 34 If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment. And when I come I will give further directions.
