1 Corinthians 9

TMB 1 Am I not an apostle? Am I not free? Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? Are not you my work in the Lord? NIV 1 Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not the result of my work in the Lord? TMB 2 If I am not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you. For ye are the seal of mine apostleship in the Lord. NIV 2 Even though I may not be an apostle to others, surely I am to you! For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. TMB 3 Mine answer to those who examine me is this: NIV 3 This is my defense to those who sit in judgment on me. TMB 4 Have we not power to eat and to drink? NIV 4 Don't we have the right to food and drink? TMB 5 Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as do other apostles and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas? NIV 5 Don't we have the right to take a believing wife along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord's brothers and Cephas ? TMB 6 Or is it I only and Barnabas who have not power to forbear working?ΠNIV 6 Or is it only I and Barnabas who must work for a living? TMB 7 Who goeth to war at any time at his own expense? Who planteth a vineyard and eateth not of the fruit thereof? Or who feedeth a flock and eateth not of the milk of the flock? NIV 7 Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat of its grapes? Who tends a flock and does not drink of the milk? TMB 8 Say I these things as a man, or saith not the law the same also? NIV 8 Do I say this merely from a human point of view? Doesn't the Law say the same thing? TMB 9 For it is written in the Law of Moses: "Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn." Doth God take care for oxen, NIV 9 For it is written in the Law of Moses: "Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain." Is it about oxen that God is concerned? TMB 10 or doth He say it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope, and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. NIV 10 Surely he says this for us, doesn't he? Yes, this was written for us, because when the plowman plows and the thresher threshes, they ought to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest. TMB 11 If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it so great a thing if we should reap your worldly things? NIV 11 If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? TMB 12 If others are partakers of this power over you, are we not even more? Nevertheless we have not used this power, but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the Gospel of Christ. NIV 12 If others have this right of support from you, shouldn't we have it all the more? But we did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ. TMB 13 Do ye not know that those who minister concerning holy things live of the things of the temple, and those who wait upon the altar are partakers with the altar? NIV 13 Don't you know that those who work in the temple get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in what is offered on the altar? TMB 14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that those who preach the Gospel should live from the Gospel. NIV 14 In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel. TMB 15 But I have used none of these things; neither have I written, that these things should be so done unto me. For it would be better for me to die than that any man should make my glorying void. NIV 15 But I have not used any of these rights. And I am not writing this in the hope that you will do such things for me. I would rather die than have anyone deprive me of this boast. TMB 16 For though I preach the Gospel, I have nothing to glory about, for necessity is laid upon me. Yea, woe is unto me if I preach not the Gospel! NIV 16 Yet when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, for I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! TMB 17 For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward; but if against my will, a dispensing of the Gospel is committed unto me. NIV 17 If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward; if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me. TMB 18 What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the Gospel, I may make the Gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the Gospel. NIV 18 What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so not make use of my rights in preaching it. TMB 19 For though I am free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more. NIV 19 Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. TMB 20 And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain those who are under the law; NIV 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. TMB 21 to those who are outside the law, as outside the law (though not outside the law of God, but under the law of Christ), that I might gain those who are outside the law. NIV 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law), so as to win those not having the law. TMB 22 To the weak I became as weak, that I might gain the weak. I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. NIV 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. TMB 23 And this I do for the Gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you. NIV 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. TMB 24 Know ye not that those who run in a race all run, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain it. NIV 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. TMB 25 And every man that striveth for mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible. NIV 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. TMB 26 I therefore so run, but not with uncertainty; I so fight, but not as one that beateth the air.ΠNIV 26 Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. TMB 27 But I keep control of my body, and bring it into subjection, lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. NIV 27 No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
