1 John 2

NCV 1 My dear children, I write this letter to you so you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have a helper in the presence of the Father -- Jesus Christ, the One who does what is right. NIV 1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. NCV 2 He is the way our sins are taken away, and not only our sins but the sins of all people. NIV 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. NCV 3 We can be sure that we know God if we obey his commands. NIV 3 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. NCV 4 Anyone who says, "I know God," but does not obey God's commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. NIV 4 The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. NCV 5 But if someone obeys God's teaching, then in that person God's love has truly reached its goal. This is how we can be sure we are living in God: NIV 5 But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: NCV 6 Whoever says that he lives in God must live as Jesus lived. NIV 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. NCV 7 My dear friends, I am not writing a new command to you but an old command you have had from the beginning. It is the teaching you have already heard. NIV 7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. NCV 8 But also I am writing a new command to you, and you can see its truth in Jesus and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining. NIV 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. NCV 9 Anyone who says, "I am in the light," but hates a brother or sister, is still in the darkness. NIV 9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. NCV 10 Whoever loves a brother or sister lives in the light and will not cause anyone to stumble in his faith. NIV 10 Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble. NCV 11 But whoever hates a brother or sister is in darkness, lives in darkness, and does not know where to go, because the darkness has made that person blind. NIV 11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him. NCV 12 I write to you, dear children, because your sins are forgiven through Christ. NIV 12 I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name. NCV 13 I write to you, parents, because you know the One who existed from the beginning. I write to you, young people, because you have defeated the Evil One. NIV 13 I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, dear children, because you have known the Father. NCV 14 I write to you, children, because you know the Father. I write to you, parents, because you know the One who existed from the beginning. I write to you, young people, because you are strong; the teaching of God lives in you, and you have defeated the Evil One. NIV 14 I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one. NCV 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If you love the world, the love of the Father is not in you. NIV 15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. NCV 16 These are the ways of the world: wanting to please our sinful selves, wanting the sinful things we see, and being too proud of what we have. None of these come from the Father, but all of them come from the world. NIV 16 For everything in the world--the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does--comes not from the Father but from the world. NCV 17 The world and everything that people want in it are passing away, but the person who does what God wants lives forever. NIV 17 The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever. NCV 18 My dear children, these are the last days. You have heard that the enemy of Christ is coming, and now many enemies of Christ are already here. This is how we know that these are the last days. NIV 18 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. NCV 19 These enemies of Christ were in our fellowship, but they left us. They never really belonged to us; if they had been a part of us, they would have stayed with us. But they left, and this shows that none of them really belonged to us. NIV 19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us. NCV 20 You have the giftn that the Holy One gave you, so you all know the truth. NIV 20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth. NCV 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth but because you do know the truth. And you know that no lie comes from the truth. NIV 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth. NCV 22 Who is the liar? It is the person who does not accept Jesus as the Christ. This is the enemy of Christ: the person who does not accept the Father and his Son. NIV 22 Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist--he denies the Father and the Son. NCV 23 Whoever does not accept the Son does not have the Father. But whoever confesses the Son has the Father, too. NIV 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also. NCV 24 Be sure you continue to follow the teaching you heard from the beginning. If you continue to follow what you heard from the beginning, you will stay in the Son and in the Father. NIV 24 See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. NCV 25 And this is what the Son promised to us -- life forever. NIV 25 And this is what he promised us--even eternal life. NCV 26 I am writing this letter about those people who are trying to lead you the wrong way. NIV 26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. NCV 27 Christ gave you a special gift that is still in you, so you do not need any other teacher. His gift teaches you about everything, and it is true, not false. So continue to live in Christ, as his gift taught you. NIV 27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit--just as it has taught you, remain in him. NCV 28 Yes, my dear children, live in him so that when Christ comes back, we can be without fear and not be ashamed in his presence. NIV 28 And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming. NCV 29 If you know that Christ is all that is right, you know that all who do right are God's children. NIV 29 If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.
