1 John 2:1-11

NLT 1 My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. NIV 1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. NLT 2 He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world. NIV 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. NLT 3 And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments. NIV 3 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. NLT 4 If someone claims, “I know God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. NIV 4 The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. NLT 5 But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. NIV 5 But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: NLT 6 Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did. NIV 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. NLT 7 Dear friends, I am not writing a new commandment for you; rather it is an old one you have had from the very beginning. This old commandment—to love one another—is the same message you heard before. NIV 7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. NLT 8 Yet it is also new. Jesus lived the truth of this commandment, and you also are living it. For the darkness is disappearing, and the true light is already shining. NIV 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. NLT 9 If anyone claims, “I am living in the light,” but hates a fellow believer, that person is still living in darkness. NIV 9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. NLT 10 Anyone who loves a fellow believer is living in the light and does not cause others to stumble. NIV 10 Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble. NLT 11 But anyone who hates a fellow believer is still living and walking in darkness. Such a person does not know the way to go, having been blinded by the darkness. NIV 11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him.
