1 Peter 3

LEB 1 In the same way, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some are disobedient to the word, they may be won over without a word by the conduct of their wives, NIV 1 Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, LEB 2 [when they] see your respectful, pure conduct. NIV 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. LEB 3 Let your adornment not be the external [kind], braiding hair and putting on gold jewelry or putting on [fine] clothing, NIV 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. LEB 4 but the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable [quality] of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is highly valuable in the sight of God. NIV 4 Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. LEB 5 For in the [same] way formerly the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves [by] being subject to their own husbands, NIV 5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands, LEB 6 like Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose children you have become [when you] do good and are not frightened with respect to any terror. NIV 6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. LEB 7 Husbands, in the same way live with [your wives] {knowledgeably}, as with the weaker female vessel, showing [them] honor as fellow heirs also of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered. NIV 7 Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers. LEB 8 And finally, all [of you be] harmonious, sympathetic, showing mutual affection, compassionate, humble, NIV 8 Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. LEB 9 not repaying evil for evil or insult for insult, but on the other hand blessing [others], because for this [reason] you were called, so that you could inherit a blessing. NIV 9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. LEB 10 For "The one who wants to love life and see good days must keep his<note: *Literally "the"; the Greek article is used here as a possessive pronoun> tongue from evil and [his] lips must not speak deceit. NIV 10 For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. LEB 11 And he must turn away from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. NIV 11 He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. LEB 12 For the eyes of the Lord [are] on the righteous, and his ears [are open to] their prayer. But the face of the Lord [is] against those who do evil. NIV 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil." LEB 13 And who [is] the one who will harm you if you are a zealous adherent for what is good? NIV 13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? LEB 14 But even if you might suffer for the sake of righteousness, [you are] blessed. And do not be afraid of their intimidation or be disturbed, NIV 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened." LEB 15 but set Christ apart [as] Lord in your hearts, always ready to [make] a defense to anyone who asks you [for] an accounting concerning the hope [that is] in you. NIV 15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, LEB 16 But [do so] with courtesy and respect, having a good conscience, so that in [the things] in which you are slandered, the ones who malign your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. NIV 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. LEB 17 For [it is] better to suffer for doing good, {if God wills it}, than for doing evil. NIV 17 It is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. LEB 18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, in order that he could bring you to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, NIV 18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, LEB 19 in which also he went [and] proclaimed to the spirits in prison, NIV 19 through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison LEB 20 who were formerly disobedient, when the patience of God waited in the days of Noah, [while] an ark was being constructed, in which a few--that is, eight souls--were rescued through water. NIV 20 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, LEB 21 And also, corresponding to [this], baptism now saves you, not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, NIV 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also--not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, LEB 22 who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, with angels and authorities and powers having been subjected to him. NIV 22 who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand--with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
