1 Peter 3

NCV 1 In the same way, you wives should yield to your husbands. Then, if some husbands do not obey God's teaching, they will be persuaded to believe without anyone's saying a word to them. They will be persuaded by the way their wives live. NIV 1 Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, NCV 2 Your husbands will see the pure lives you live with your respect for God. NIV 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. NCV 3 It is not fancy hair, gold jewelry, or fine clothes that should make you beautiful. NIV 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. NCV 4 No, your beauty should come from within you -- the beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit that will never be destroyed and is very precious to God. NIV 4 Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. NCV 5 In this same way the holy women who lived long ago and followed God made themselves beautiful, yielding to their own husbands. NIV 5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands, NCV 6 Sarah obeyed Abraham, her husband, and called him her master. And you women are true children of Sarah if you always do what is right and are not afraid. NIV 6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. NCV 7 In the same way, you husbands should live with your wives in an understanding way, since they are weaker than you. But show them respect, because God gives them the same blessing he gives you -- the grace that gives true life. Do this so that nothing will stop your prayers. NIV 7 Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers. NCV 8 Finally, all of you should be in agreement, understanding each other, loving each other as family, being kind and humble. NIV 8 Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. NCV 9 Do not do wrong to repay a wrong, and do not insult to repay an insult. But repay with a blessing, because you yourselves were called to do this so that you might receive a blessing. NIV 9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. NCV 10 The Scripture says, "A person must do these things to enjoy life and have many happy days. He must not say evil things, and he must not tell lies. NIV 10 For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. NCV 11 He must stop doing evil and do good. He must look for peace and work for it. NIV 11 He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. NCV 12 The Lord sees the good people and listens to their prayers. those who do evil." NIV 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil." NCV 13 If you are trying hard to do good, no one can really hurt you. NIV 13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? NCV 14 But even if you suffer for doing right, you are blessed. "Don't be afraid of what they fear; do not dread those things." NIV 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened." NCV 15 But respect Christ as the holy Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to answer everyone who asks you to explain about the hope you have, NIV 15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, NCV 16 but answer in a gentle way and with respect. Keep a clear conscience so that those who speak evil of your good life in Christ will be made ashamed. NIV 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. NCV 17 It is better to suffer for doing good than for doing wrong if that is what God wants. NIV 17 It is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. NCV 18 Christ himself suffered for sins once. He was not guilty, but he suffered for those who are guilty to bring you to God. His body was killed, but he was made alive in the spirit. NIV 18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, NCV 19 And in the spirit he went and preached to the spirits in prison NIV 19 through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison NCV 20 who refused to obey God long ago in the time of Noah. God was waiting patiently for them while Noah was building the boat. Only a few people -- eight in all -- were saved by water. NIV 20 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, NCV 21 And that water is like baptism that now saves you -- not the washing of dirt from the body, but the promise made to God from a good conscience. And this is because Jesus Christ was raised from the dead. NIV 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also--not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, NCV 22 Now Jesus has gone into heaven and is at God's right side ruling over angels, authorities, and powers. NIV 22 who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand--with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
