1 Peter 4

RSV 1 Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same thought, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, NIV 1 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin. RSV 2 so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer by human passions but by the will of God. NIV 2 As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. RSV 3 Let the time that is past suffice for doing what the Gentiles like to do, living in licentiousness, passions, drunkenness, revels, carousing, and lawless idolatry. NIV 3 For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do--living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. RSV 4 They are surprised that you do not now join them in the same wild profligacy, and they abuse you; NIV 4 They think it strange that you do not plunge with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they heap abuse on you. RSV 5 but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. NIV 5 But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. RSV 6 For this is why the gospel was preached even to the dead, that though judged in the flesh like men, they might live in the spirit like God. NIV 6 For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to men in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit. RSV 7 The end of all things is at hand; therefore keep sane and sober for your prayers. NIV 7 The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. RSV 8 Above all hold unfailing your love for one another, since love covers a multitude of sins. NIV 8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. RSV 9 Practice hospitality ungrudgingly to one another. NIV 9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. RSV 10 As each has received a gift, employ it for one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: NIV 10 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. RSV 11 whoever speaks, as one who utters oracles of God; whoever renders service, as one who renders it by the strength which God supplies; in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. NIV 11 If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. RSV 12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal which comes upon you to prove you, as though something strange were happening to you. NIV 12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. RSV 13 But rejoice in so far as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. NIV 13 But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. RSV 14 If you are reproached for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. NIV 14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. RSV 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or a wrongdoer, or a mischief-maker; NIV 15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. RSV 16 yet if one suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but under that name let him glorify God. NIV 16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. RSV 17 For the time has come for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? NIV 17 For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? RSV 18 And "If the righteous man is scarcely saved, where will the impious and sinner appear?" NIV 18 And, "If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?" RSV 19 Therefore let those who suffer according to God's will do right and entrust their souls to a faithful Creator. NIV 19 So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.
