1 David perdona la vida de Saúl<br />Después de que Saúl regresó de pelear contra los filisteos, se le informó que David se había ido al desierto de En-gadi.

After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, “David is in the Desert of En Gedi.”
2 Entonces Saúl escogió a tres mil soldados selectos de todo Israel y fue en busca de David y de sus hombres cerca de los peñascos de las cabras salvajes.

So Saul took three thousand able young men from all Israel and set out to look for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats.
3 En el lugar donde el camino pasaba por algunos rediles, Saúl entró en una cueva para hacer sus necesidades. ¡Pero resultó que David y sus hombres estaban escondidos más adentro de esa misma cueva!

He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. David and his men were far back in the cave.
4 «¡Ahora es tu oportunidad! —los hombres le susurraron a David—. Hoy el Señor<br /> te dice: “Te aseguro que pondré a tu enemigo en tu poder, para que hagas con él lo que desees”». Entonces David se le acercó sigilosamente y cortó un pedazo del borde del manto de Saúl.

The men said, “This is the day the LORD spoke of when he said to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.’ ” Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.
5 Pero comenzó a remorderle la conciencia por haber cortado el manto de Saúl.

Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe.
6 «El Señor<br /> sabe que no debería haberle hecho esto a mi señor y rey —dijo a sus hombres—. Que el Señor<br /> me libre de hacerle tal cosa a mi señor el rey y atacar al ungido del Señor<br />, porque el Señor<br /> mismo lo ha elegido».

He said to his men, “The LORD forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the LORD’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the LORD.”
7 Entonces David contuvo a sus hombres y no les permitió que mataran a Saúl.<br />Después de que Saúl saliera de la cueva para seguir su camino,

With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way.
8 David salió y le gritó:<br />—¡Mi señor el rey!<br />Cuando Saúl miró hacia atrás, David se inclinó hasta el suelo delante de él

Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.
9 y le gritó a Saúl:<br />—¿Por qué le hace caso a la gente que dice que quiero hacerle daño?

He said to Saul, “Why do you listen when men say, ‘David is bent on harming you’?
10 Este mismo día puede ver con sus propios ojos que no es verdad. Pues el Señor<br /> lo puso a mi merced allí en la cueva, y algunos de mis hombres me dijeron que lo matara, pero yo le perdoné la vida. Pues dije: “Nunca le haré daño al rey; él es el ungido del Señor<br />”.

This day you have seen with your own eyes how the LORD delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you; I said, ‘I will not lay my hand on my lord, because he is the LORD’s anointed.’
11 Mire, padre mío, lo que tengo en mi mano. ¡Es un pedazo del borde de su manto! Yo lo corté, pero no lo maté. Esto prueba que no intento hacerle daño y que no he pecado contra usted, aun cuando usted me ha estado persiguiendo para matarme.

See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. See that there is nothing in my hand to indicate that I am guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not wronged you, but you are hunting me down to take my life.
12 »Que el Señor<br /> juzgue entre nosotros. Tal vez el Señor<br /> lo castigue por lo que intenta hacer, pero yo nunca le haré daño.

May the LORD judge between you and me. And may the LORD avenge the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you.
13 Como dice el antiguo proverbio: “De la gente malvada, provienen las malas acciones”. Así que puede estar seguro de que nunca le haré daño.

As the old saying goes, ‘From evildoers come evil deeds,’ so my hand will not touch you.
14 De todas formas, ¿a quién trata de atrapar el rey de Israel? ¿Debería pasar tiempo persiguiendo a alguien que no vale más que un perro muerto o una sola pulga?

“Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Who are you pursuing? A dead dog? A flea?
15 Por lo tanto, que el Señor<br /> juzgue quién de nosotros tiene la razón y que castigue al culpable. ¡Él es mi defensor y me rescatará de su poder!

May the LORD be our judge and decide between us. May he consider my cause and uphold it; may he vindicate me by delivering me from your hand.”
16 Cuando David terminó de hablar, Saúl le respondió:<br />—¿Realmente eres tú, David, hijo mío?<br />Enseguida comenzó a llorar

When David finished saying this, Saul asked, “Is that your voice, David my son?” And he wept aloud.
17 y le dijo a David:<br />—Eres mejor persona que yo, porque has devuelto bien por mal.

“You are more righteous than I,” he said. “You have treated me well, but I have treated you badly.
18 Es cierto, has sido increíblemente bondadoso conmigo hoy, porque cuando el Señor<br /> me puso en un lugar donde pudiste haberme matado, no lo hiciste.

You have just now told me about the good you did to me; the LORD delivered me into your hands, but you did not kill me.
19 ¿Quién otro dejaría ir a su enemigo cuando lo tiene en su poder? Que el Señor<br /> te recompense bien por la bondad que hoy me has demostrado.

When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the LORD reward you well for the way you treated me today.
20 Ahora me doy cuenta de que ciertamente tú serás el rey, y de que el reino de Israel prosperará bajo tu gobierno.

I know that you will surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands.
21 Júrame, entonces, por el Señor<br />, que cuando esto suceda, ¡no matarás a mi familia ni destruirás a mis descendientes!

Now swear to me by the LORD that you will not kill off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father’s family.”
22 Entonces David le prometió esto a Saúl con un juramento. Después Saúl volvió a su casa, pero David y sus hombres regresaron a su fortaleza.

So David gave his oath to Saul. Then Saul returned home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.
