1 Thessalonians 5

LEB 1 Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need [of anything] to be written to you, NIV 1 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, LEB 2 for [you] yourselves well know that the day of the Lord is coming in the [same] way as a thief in the night. NIV 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. LEB 3 Whenever they say "Peace and security," then sudden destruction will overtake them like the birth pains of {a pregnant woman}, and they will not possibly escape. NIV 3 While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. LEB 4 But you, brothers, are not in the darkness, so that the day should catch you like a thief, NIV 4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. LEB 5 for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. NIV 5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. LEB 6 So then, we must not sleep like the rest, but must be on the alert and be self-controlled. NIV 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. LEB 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night. NIV 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. LEB 8 But [because] we are of the day, we must be sober, [by] putting on the breastplate of faith and love and [as] a helmet the hope of salvation, NIV 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. LEB 9 because God did not appoint us for wrath, but for the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, NIV 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. LEB 10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live at the same time with him. NIV 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. LEB 11 Therefore encourage one another and build up {each other}, just as indeed you are doing. NIV 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. LEB 12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and rule over you in the Lord and admonish you, NIV 12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. LEB 13 and to esteem them beyond all measure in love, because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. NIV 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. LEB 14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish the disorderly, console the discouraged, help the sick, be patient toward all [people]. NIV 14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. LEB 15 See to it that no one pays back evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue good toward one another and toward all [people]. NIV 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else. LEB 16 Rejoice always, NIV 16 Be joyful always; LEB 17 pray constantly, NIV 17 pray continually; LEB 18 give thanks in everything; for this [is] the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. NIV 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. LEB 19 Do not quench the Spirit. NIV 19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire; LEB 20 Do not despise prophecies, NIV 20 do not treat prophecies with contempt. LEB 21 but examine all [things]; hold fast to [what is] good. NIV 21 Test everything. Hold on to the good. LEB 22 Abstain from every form of evil. NIV 22 Avoid every kind of evil. LEB 23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your spirit and soul and body be kept complete, blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. LEB 24 The one who calls you [is] faithful, who also will do [this]. NIV 24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it. LEB 25 Brothers, pray for us. NIV 25 Brothers, pray for us. LEB 26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. NIV 26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. LEB 27 I adjure you by the Lord, have this letter read aloud to all the brothers. NIV 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers. LEB 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ [be] with you. NIV 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
