1 Thessalonians 5

NAS 1 Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. NIV 1 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, NAS 2 For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. NIV 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. NAS 3 While they are saying, "Peace and safety!" then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child , and they will not escape. NIV 3 While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. NAS 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief; NIV 4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. NAS 5 for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; NIV 5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. NAS 6 so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober. NIV 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. NAS 7 For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night. NIV 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. NAS 8 But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. NIV 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. NAS 9 For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, NIV 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. NAS 10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. NIV 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. NAS 11 Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing. NIV 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. NAS 12 But we request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who diligently labor among you, and have charge over you in the Lord and give you instruction, NIV 12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. NAS 13 and that you esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Live in peace with one another. NIV 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. NAS 14 We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone. NIV 14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. NAS 15 See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people. NIV 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else. NAS 16 Rejoice always; NIV 16 Be joyful always; NAS 17 pray without ceasing; NIV 17 pray continually; NAS 18 in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. NIV 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. NAS 19 Do not quench the Spirit; NIV 19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire; NAS 20 do not despise prophetic utterances. NIV 20 do not treat prophecies with contempt. NAS 21 But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; NIV 21 Test everything. Hold on to the good. NAS 22 abstain from every form of evil. NIV 22 Avoid every kind of evil. NAS 23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. NAS 24 Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass. NIV 24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it. NAS 25 Brethren, pray for us. NIV 25 Brothers, pray for us. NAS 26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss. NIV 26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. NAS 27 I adjure you by the Lord to have this letter read to all the brethren.
