1 Thessalonians 5

NRS 1 Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. NIV 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. NRS 3 When they say, "There is peace and security," then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! NIV 3 While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. NRS 4 But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; NIV 4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. NRS 5 for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. NIV 5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. NRS 6 So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; NIV 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. NRS 7 for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. NIV 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. NRS 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. NIV 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. NRS 9 For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, NIV 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. NRS 10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him. NIV 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. NRS 12 But we appeal to you, brothers and sisters, to respect those who labor among you, and have charge of you in the Lord and admonish you; NIV 12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. NRS 13 esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. NIV 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. NRS 14 And we urge you, beloved, to admonish the idlers, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with all of them. NRS 15 See that none of you repays evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to all.
