1 John 2:1-9

RSV 1 My little children, I am writing this to you so that you may not sin; but if any one does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; NIV 1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. RSV 2 and he is the expiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. NIV 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. RSV 3 And by this we may be sure that we know him, if we keep his commandments. NIV 3 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. RSV 4 He who says "I know him" but disobeys his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him; NIV 4 The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. RSV 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly love for God is perfected. By this we may be sure that we are in him: NIV 5 But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: RSV 6 he who says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. NIV 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. RSV 7 Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment which you had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you have heard. NIV 7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. RSV 8 Yet I am writing you a new commandment, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. NIV 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. RSV 9 He who says he is in the light and hates his brother is in the darkness still. NIV 9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness.
