1 John 5

CEB 1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born from God. Whoever loves someone who is a parent loves the child born to the parent. NIV 1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. CEB 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: when we love God and keep God's commandments. NIV 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. CEB 3 This is the love of God: we keep God's commandments. God's commandments are not difficult, NIV 3 This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, CEB 4 because everyone who is born from God defeats the world. And this is the victory that has defeated the world: our faith. NIV 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. CEB 5 Who defeats the world? Isn't it the one who believes that Jesus is God's Son? NIV 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. CEB 6 This is the one who came by water and blood: Jesus Christ. Not by water only but by water and blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. NIV 6 This is the one who came by water and blood--Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. CEB 7 The three are testifying— NIV 7 For there are three that testify: CEB 8 the Spirit, the water, and the blood—and the three are united in agreement. NIV 8 the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. CEB 9 If we receive human testimony, God's testimony is greater, because this is what God testified: he has testified about his Son. NIV 9 We accept man's testimony, but God's testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. CEB 10 The one who believes in God's Son has the testimony within; the one who doesn't believe God has made God a liar, because that one has not believed the testimony that God gave about his Son. NIV 10 Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. CEB 11 And this is the testimony: God gave eternal life to us, and this life is in his Son. NIV 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. CEB 12 The one who has the Son has life. The one who doesn't have God's Son does not have life. NIV 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. CEB 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of God's Son so that you can know that you have eternal life. NIV 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. CEB 14 This is the confidence that we have in our relationship with God: If we ask for anything in agreement with his will, he listens to us. NIV 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. CEB 15 If we know that he listens to whatever we ask, we know that we have received what we asked from him. NIV 15 And if we know that he hears us--whatever we ask--we know that we have what we asked of him. CEB 16 If anyone sees a brother or sister committing a sin that does not result in death, they should pray, and God will give life to them—that is, to those who commit sins that don't result in death. There is a sin that results in death—I'm not saying that you should pray about that. NIV 16 If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that. CEB 17 Every unrighteous action is sin, but there is a sin that does not result in death. NIV 17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death. CEB 18 We know that everyone born from God does not sin, but the ones born from God guard themselves, and the evil one cannot touch them. NIV 18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him. CEB 19 We know we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. NIV 19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. CEB 20 We know that God's Son has come and has given us understanding to know the one who is true. We are in the one who is true by being in his Son, Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. NIV 20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true--even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. CEB 21 Little children, guard yourselves from idols! NIV 21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.
