1 Kings 1:1-27

NIRV 1 King David was now very old. He couldn't keep warm even when blankets were spread over him. NIV 1 When King David was old and well advanced in years, he could not keep warm even when they put covers over him. NIRV 2 So his servants spoke to him. They said, "You are our king and master. Please let us try to find a young virgin to help you. She can take care of you. She can lie down beside you. Then you can keep warm." NIV 2 So his servants said to him, "Let us look for a young virgin to attend the king and take care of him. She can lie beside him so that our lord the king may keep warm." NIRV 3 So David's servants looked all over Israel for a beautiful young woman. They found Abishag. She was from the town of Shunem. They brought her to the king. NIV 3 Then they searched throughout Israel for a beautiful girl and found Abishag, a Shunammite, and brought her to the king. NIRV 4 The woman was very beautiful. She took care of the king and served him. But the king didn't have sex with her. NIV 4 The girl was very beautiful; she took care of the king and waited on him, but the king had no intimate relations with her. NIRV 5 Adonijah was the son of David and his wife Haggith. He came forward and announced, "I'm going to be the next king." So he got chariots and horses ready. He also got 50 men to run in front of him. NIV 5 Now Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, put himself forward and said, "I will be king." So he got chariots and horses ready, with fifty men to run ahead of him. NIRV 6 His father had never tried to stop him from doing what he wanted to. His father had never asked him, "Why are you acting the way you do?" Adonijah was also very handsome. Now that Absalom was dead, Adonijah was David's oldest son. NIV 6 (His father had never interfered with him by asking, "Why do you behave as you do?" He was also very handsome and was born next after Absalom.) NIRV 7 Adonijah talked things over with Joab, the son of Zeruiah. He also talked with the priest Abiathar. They agreed to help him. NIV 7 Adonijah conferred with Joab son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest, and they gave him their support. NIRV 8 But the priest Zadok and Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, didn't join Adonijah. The prophet Nathan didn't join him. Shimei and Rei didn't join him. And neither did David's special guard. NIV 8 But Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei and Rei and David's special guard did not join Adonijah. NIRV 9 Adonijah sacrificed sheep, cattle and fat calves. He sacrificed them at the Stone of Zoheleth near En Rogel. He invited all of his brothers, the king's sons, and all of the men of Judah who were royal officials. NIV 9 Adonijah then sacrificed sheep, cattle and fattened calves at the Stone of Zoheleth near En Rogel. He invited all his brothers, the king's sons, and all the men of Judah who were royal officials, NIRV 10 But he didn't invite Benaiah or the prophet Nathan. He didn't invite the special guard or his brother Solomon either. NIV 10 but he did not invite Nathan the prophet or Benaiah or the special guard or his brother Solomon. NIRV 11 Nathan spoke to Solomon's mother Bathsheba. He asked, "Haven't you heard? Adonijah, the son of Haggith, has made himself king. And King David doesn't even know about it. NIV 11 Then Nathan asked Bathsheba, Solomon's mother, "Have you not heard that Adonijah, the son of Haggith, has become king without our lord David's knowing it? NIRV 12 "So let me tell you what to do to save your life. It will also save the life of your son Solomon. NIV 12 Now then, let me advise you how you can save your own life and the life of your son Solomon. NIRV 13 Go in and see King David. Say to him, 'You are my king and master. You took an oath. You promised me, "You can be sure that your son Solomon will be king after me. He will sit on my throne." If that's really true, why has Adonijah become king?' NIV 13 Go in to King David and say to him, 'My lord the king, did you not swear to me your servant: "Surely Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne"? Why then has Adonijah become king?' NIRV 14 "While you are still talking to the king, I'll come in. I'll tell him that what you have said is true." NIV 14 While you are still there talking to the king, I will come in and confirm what you have said." NIRV 15 So Bathsheba went to see the old king in his room. Abishag, the Shunammite, was taking care of him there. NIV 15 So Bathsheba went to see the aged king in his room, where Abishag the Shunammite was attending him. NIRV 16 Bathsheba bowed low. She got down on her knees in front of the king. "What do you want?" the king asked. NIV 16 Bathsheba bowed low and knelt before the king. "What is it you want?" the king asked. NIRV 17 She said to him, "My master, you took an oath in the name of the LORD your God. You promised me, 'Your son Solomon will be king after me. He will sit on my throne.' NIV 17 She said to him, "My lord, you yourself swore to me your servant by the LORD your God: 'Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne.' NIRV 18 "But now Adonijah has made himself king. And you don't even know about it. NIV 18 But now Adonijah has become king, and you, my lord the king, do not know about it. NIRV 19 He has sacrificed large numbers of cattle, fat calves and sheep. He has invited all of the king's sons. He has also invited the priest Abiathar and Joab, the commander of the army. But he hasn't invited your son Solomon. NIV 19 He has sacrificed great numbers of cattle, fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the king's sons, Abiathar the priest and Joab the commander of the army, but he has not invited Solomon your servant. NIRV 20 "You are my king and master. All of the people of Israel are watching to see what you will do. They want to find out from you who will sit on the throne after you. NIV 20 My lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, to learn from you who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. NIRV 21 If you don't do something, I and my son Solomon will be treated like people who have committed crimes. That will happen as soon as you join the members of your family who have already died." NIV 21 Otherwise, as soon as my lord the king is laid to rest with his fathers, I and my son Solomon will be treated as criminals." NIRV 22 While she was still speaking with the king, the prophet Nathan arrived. NIV 22 While she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet arrived. NIRV 23 The king was told, "The prophet Nathan is here." So Nathan went to the king. He bowed down with his face toward the ground. NIV 23 And they told the king, "Nathan the prophet is here." So he went before the king and bowed with his face to the ground. NIRV 24 Nathan said, "You are my king and master. Have you announced that Adonijah will be king after you? Have you said he will sit on your throne? NIV 24 Nathan said, "Have you, my lord the king, declared that Adonijah shall be king after you, and that he will sit on your throne? NIRV 25 Today he has gone down outside the city. He has sacrificed large numbers of cattle, fat calves and sheep. He has invited all of the king's sons. He has also invited the commanders of the army and the priest Abiathar. Even now they are eating and drinking with him. They are saying, 'May King Adonijah live a long time!' NIV 25 Today he has gone down and sacrificed great numbers of cattle, fattened calves, and sheep. He has invited all the king's sons, the commanders of the army and Abiathar the priest. Right now they are eating and drinking with him and saying, 'Long live King Adonijah!' NIRV 26 "But he didn't invite me. He didn't invite the priest Zadok or Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada. He didn't invite your son Solomon either. NIV 26 But me your servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon he did not invite. NIRV 27 "King David, have you allowed all of that to happen? Did you do it without letting us know about it? Why didn't you tell us who is going to sit on your throne after you?" NIV 27 Is this something my lord the king has done without letting his servants know who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?"
