1 Peter 1

MSG 1 I, Peter, am an apostle on assignment by Jesus, the Messiah, writing to exiles scattered to the four winds. Not one is missing, not one forgotten. NIV 1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To God's elect, strangers in the world, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, MSG 2 God the Father has his eye on each of you, and has determined by the work of the Spirit to keep you obedient through the sacrifice of Jesus. May everything good from God be yours! NIV 2 who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance. MSG 3 What a God we have! And how fortunate we are to have him, this Father of our Master Jesus! Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we've been given a brand-new life and have everything to live for, NIV 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, MSG 4 including a future in heaven - and the future starts now! NIV 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade--kept in heaven for you, MSG 5 God is keeping careful watch over us and the future. The Day is coming when you'll have it all - life healed and whole. NIV 5 who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. MSG 6 I know how great this makes you feel, even though you have to put up with every kind of aggravation in the meantime. NIV 6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. MSG 7 Pure gold put in the fire comes out of it proved pure; genuine faith put through this suffering comes out proved genuine. When Jesus wraps this all up, it's your faith, not your gold, that God will have on display as evidence of his victory. NIV 7 These have come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire--may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. MSG 8 You never saw him, yet you love him. You still don't see him, yet you trust him - with laughter and singing. NIV 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, MSG 9 Because you kept on believing, you'll get what you're looking forward to: total salvation. NIV 9 for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls. MSG 10 The prophets who told us this was coming asked a lot of questions about this gift of life God was preparing. NIV 10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, MSG 11 The Messiah's Spirit let them in on some of it - that the Messiah would experience suffering, followed by glory. They clamored to know who and when. NIV 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. MSG 12 All they were told was that they were serving you, you who by orders from heaven have now heard for yourselves - through the Holy Spirit - the Message of those prophecies fulfilled. Do you realize how fortunate you are? Angels would have given anything to be in on this! NIV 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things. MSG 13 So roll up your sleeves, put your mind in gear, be totally ready to receive the gift that's coming when Jesus arrives. NIV 13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. MSG 14 Don't lazily slip back into those old grooves of evil, doing just what you feel like doing. You didn't know any better then; you do now. NIV 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. MSG 15 As obedient children, let yourselves be pulled into a way of life shaped by God's life, a life energetic and blazing with holiness. NIV 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; MSG 16 God said, "I am holy; you be holy." NIV 16 for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy." MSG 17 You call out to God for help and he helps - he's a good Father that way. But don't forget, he's also a responsible Father, and won't let you get by with sloppy living. NIV 17 Since you call on a Father who judges each man's work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear. MSG 18 It cost God plenty to get you out of that dead-end, empty-headed life you grew up in. NIV 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, MSG 19 He paid with Christ's sacred blood, you know. He died like an unblemished, sacrificial lamb. NIV 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. MSG 20 And this was no afterthought. Even though it has only lately - at the end of the ages - become public knowledge, God always knew he was going to do this for you. NIV 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. MSG 21 It's because of this sacrificed Messiah, whom God then raised from the dead and glorified, that you trust God, that you know you have a future in God. NIV 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God. MSG 22 Now that you've cleaned up your lives by following the truth, love one another as if your lives depended on it. NIV 22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart. MSG 23 Your new life is not like your old life. Your old birth came from mortal sperm; your new birth comes from God's living Word. Just think: a life conceived by God himself! NIV 23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. MSG 24 That's why the prophet said, The old life is a grass life, its beauty as short-lived as wildflowers; Grass dries up, flowers droop, NIV 24 For, "All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, MSG 25 God's Word goes on and on forever. This is the Word that conceived the new life in you. NIV 25 but the word of the Lord stands forever." And this is the word that was preached to you.
