ESV 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. NIV 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. ESV 11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. NIV 11 Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. ESV 12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation. NIV 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. ESV 13 Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, NIV 13 Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, ESV 14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. NIV 14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. ESV 15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. NIV 15 For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. ESV 16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. NIV 16 Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. ESV 17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor. NIV 17 Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king. ESV 18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. NIV 18 Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh. ESV 19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. NIV 19 For it is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God. ESV 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. NIV 20 But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.
