1 Peter 3

CJB 1 In the same way, wives, submit to your husbands; so that even if some of them do not believe the Word, they will be won over by your conduct, without your saying anything, NIV 1 Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, CJB 2 as they see your respectful and pure behavior. NIV 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. CJB 3 Your beauty should not consist in externals such as fancy hairstyles, gold jewelry or what you wear; NIV 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. CJB 4 rather, let it be the inner character of your heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit. In God's sight this is of great value. NIV 4 Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. CJB 5 This is how the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves and submit to their husbands, NIV 5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands, CJB 6 the way Sarah obeyed Avraham, honoring him as her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not succumb to fear. NIV 6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. CJB 7 You husbands, likewise, conduct your married lives with understanding. Although your wife may be weaker physically, you should respect her as a fellow-heir of the gift of Life. If you don't, your prayers will be blocked. NIV 7 Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers. CJB 8 Finally, all of you, be one in mind and feeling; love as brothers; and be compassionate and humble-minded, NIV 8 Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. CJB 9 not repaying evil with evil or insult with insult, but, on the contrary, with blessing. For it is to this that you have been called, so that you may receive a blessing. NIV 9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. CJB 10 For "Whoever wants to love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit, NIV 10 For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. CJB 11 turn from evil and do good, seek peace and chase after it. NIV 11 He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. CJB 12 For ADONAI keeps his eyes on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayers; but the face of ADONAI is against those who do evil things." NIV 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil." CJB 13 For who will hurt you if you become zealots for what is good? NIV 13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? CJB 14 But even if you do suffer for being righteous, you are blessed! Moreover, don't fear what they fear or be disturbed, NIV 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened." CJB 15 but treat the Messiah as holy, as Lord in your hearts;s while remaining always ready to give a reasoned answer to anyone who asks you to explain the hope you have in you - yet with humility and fear, NIV 15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, CJB 16 keeping your conscience clear, so that when you are spoken against, those who abuse the good behavior flowing from your union with the Messiah may be put to shame. NIV 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. CJB 17 For if God has in fact willed that you should suffer, it is better that you suffer for doing what is good than for doing what is evil. NIV 17 It is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. CJB 18 For the Messiah himself died for sins, once and for all, a righteous person on behalf of unrighteous people, so that he might bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh but brought to life by the Spirit; NIV 18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, CJB 19 and in this form he went and made a proclamation to the imprisoned spirits, NIV 19 through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison CJB 20 to those who were disobedient long ago, in the days of Noach, when God waited patiently during the building of the ark, in which a few people - to be specific, eight - were delivered by means of water. NIV 20 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, CJB 21 This also prefigures what delivers us now, the water of immersion, which is not the removal of dirt from the body, but one's pledge to keep a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Yeshua the Messiah. NIV 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also--not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, CJB 22 He has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities and powers subject to him. NIV 22 who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand--with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
