1 Peter 4

NRS 1 Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same intention (for whoever has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin), NIV 1 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin. NRS 2 so as to live for the rest of your earthly life no longer by human desires but by the will of God. NIV 2 As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. NRS 3 You have already spent enough time in doing what the Gentiles like to do, living in licentiousness, passions, drunkenness, revels, carousing, and lawless idolatry. NIV 3 For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do--living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. NRS 4 They are surprised that you no longer join them in the same excesses of dissipation, and so they blaspheme. NIV 4 They think it strange that you do not plunge with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they heap abuse on you. NRS 5 But they will have to give an accounting to him who stands ready to judge the living and the dead. NIV 5 But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. NRS 6 For this is the reason the gospel was proclaimed even to the dead, so that, though they had been judged in the flesh as everyone is judged, they might live in the spirit as God does. NIV 6 For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to men in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit. NRS 7 The end of all things is near; therefore be serious and discipline yourselves for the sake of your prayers. NIV 7 The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. NRS 8 Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins. NIV 8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. NRS 9 Be hospitable to one another without complaining. NIV 9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. NRS 10 Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. NIV 10 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. NRS 11 Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen. NIV 11 If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. NRS 12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. NIV 12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. NRS 13 But rejoice insofar as you are sharing Christ's sufferings, so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed. NIV 13 But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. NRS 14 If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of glory, which is the Spirit of God, is resting on you. NIV 14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. NRS 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, a criminal, or even as a mischief maker. NIV 15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. NRS 16 Yet if any of you suffers as a Christian, do not consider it a disgrace, but glorify God because you bear this name. NIV 16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. NRS 17 For the time has come for judgment to begin with the household of God; if it begins with us, what will be the end for those who do not obey the gospel of God? NIV 17 For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? NRS 18 And "If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinners?" NIV 18 And, "If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?" NRS 19 Therefore, let those suffering in accordance with God's will entrust themselves to a faithful Creator, while continuing to do good. NIV 19 So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.
