1 Samuel 2

ESV 1 And Hannah prayed and said, "My heart exults in the LORD; my strength is exalted in the LORD. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. NIV 1 Then Hannah prayed and said: "My heart rejoices in the LORD; in the LORD my horn is lifted high. My mouth boasts over my enemies, for I delight in your deliverance. ESV 2 "There is none holy like the LORD; there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God. NIV 2 "There is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God. ESV 3 Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. NIV 3 "Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the LORD is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed. ESV 4 The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble bind on strength. NIV 4 "The bows of the warriors are broken, but those who stumbled are armed with strength. ESV 5 Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry have ceased to hunger. The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn. NIV 5 Those who were full hire themselves out for food, but those who were hungry hunger no more. She who was barren has borne seven children, but she who has had many sons pines away. ESV 6 The LORD kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. NIV 6 "The LORD brings death and makes alive; he brings down to the grave and raises up. ESV 7 The LORD makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts. NIV 7 The LORD sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts. ESV 8 He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and on them he has set the world. NIV 8 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor. "For the foundations of the earth are the LORD's; upon them he has set the world. ESV 9 "He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness, for not by might shall a man prevail. NIV 9 He will guard the feet of his saints, but the wicked will be silenced in darkness. "It is not by strength that one prevails; ESV 10 The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; against them he will thunder in heaven. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king and exalt the power of his anointed." NIV 10 those who oppose the LORD will be shattered. He will thunder against them from heaven; the LORD will judge the ends of the earth. "He will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed." ESV 11 Then Elkanah went home to Ramah. And the boy ministered to the LORD in the presence of Eli the priest. NIV 11 Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, but the boy ministered before the LORD under Eli the priest. ESV 12 Now the sons of Eli were worthless men. They did not know the LORD. NIV 12 Eli's sons were wicked men; they had no regard for the LORD. ESV 13 The custom of the priests with the people was that when any man offered sacrifice, the priest's servant would come, while the meat was boiling, with a three-pronged fork in his hand, NIV 13 Now it was the practice of the priests with the people that whenever anyone offered a sacrifice and while the meat was being boiled, the servant of the priest would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand. ESV 14 and he would thrust it into the pan or kettle or cauldron or pot. All that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is what they did at Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there. NIV 14 He would plunge it into the pan or kettle or caldron or pot, and the priest would take for himself whatever the fork brought up. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh. ESV 15 Moreover, before the fat was burned, the priest's servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, "Give meat for the priest to roast, for he will not accept boiled meat from you but only raw." NIV 15 But even before the fat was burned, the servant of the priest would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, "Give the priest some meat to roast; he won't accept boiled meat from you, but only raw." ESV 16 And if the man said to him, "Let them burn the fat first, and then take as much as you wish," he would say, "No, you must give it now, and if not, I will take it by force." NIV 16 If the man said to him, "Let the fat be burned up first, and then take whatever you want," the servant would then answer, "No, hand it over now; if you don't, I'll take it by force." ESV 17 Thus the sin of the young men was very great in the sight of the LORD, for the men treated the offering of the LORD with contempt. NIV 17 This sin of the young men was very great in the LORD's sight, for they were treating the LORD's offering with contempt. ESV 18 Samuel was ministering before the LORD, a boy clothed with a linen ephod. NIV 18 But Samuel was ministering before the LORD--a boy wearing a linen ephod. ESV 19 And his mother used to make for him a little robe and take it to him each year when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. NIV 19 Each year his mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice. ESV 20 Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, "May the LORD give you children by this woman for the petition she asked of the LORD." So then they would return to their home. NIV 20 Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, "May the LORD give you children by this woman to take the place of the one she prayed for and gave to the LORD." Then they would go home. ESV 21 Indeed the LORD visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. And the young man Samuel grew in the presence of the LORD. NIV 21 And the LORD was gracious to Hannah; she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD. ESV 22 Now Eli was very old, and he kept hearing all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who were serving at the entrance to the tent of meeting. NIV 22 Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. ESV 23 And he said to them, "Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all the people. NIV 23 So he said to them, "Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours. ESV 24 No, my sons; it is no good report that I hear the people of the LORD spreading abroad. NIV 24 No, my sons; it is not a good report that I hear spreading among the LORD's people. ESV 25 If someone sins against a man, God will mediate for him, but if someone sins against the LORD, who can intercede for him?" But they would not listen to the voice of their father, for it was the will of the LORD to put them to death. NIV 25 If a man sins against another man, God may mediate for him; but if a man sins against the LORD, who will intercede for him?" His sons, however, did not listen to their father's rebuke, for it was the LORD's will to put them to death. ESV 26 Now the young man Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the LORD and also with man. NIV 26 And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the LORD and with men. ESV 27 And there came a man of God to Eli and said to him, "Thus the LORD has said, 'Did I indeed reveal myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt subject to the house of Pharaoh? NIV 27 Now a man of God came to Eli and said to him, "This is what the LORD says: 'Did I not clearly reveal myself to your father's house when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh? ESV 28 Did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? I gave to the house of your father all my offerings by fire from the people of Israel. NIV 28 I chose your father out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in my presence. I also gave your father's house all the offerings made with fire by the Israelites. ESV 29 Why then do you scorn my sacrifices and my offerings that I commanded, and honor your sons above me by fattening yourselves on the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?' NIV 29 Why do you scorn my sacrifice and offering that I prescribed for my dwelling? Why do you honor your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?' ESV 30 Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: 'I promised that your house and the house of your father should go in and out before me forever,'but now the LORD declares: 'Far be it from me, for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed. NIV 30 "Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: 'I promised that your house and your father's house would minister before me forever.' But now the LORD declares: 'Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained. ESV 31 Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father's house, so that there will not be an old man in your house. NIV 31 The time is coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your father's house, so that there will not be an old man in your family line ESV 32 Then in distress you will look with envious eye on all the prosperity that shall be bestowed on Israel, and there shall not be an old man in your house forever. NIV 32 and you will see distress in my dwelling. Although good will be done to Israel, in your family line there will never be an old man. ESV 33 The only one of you whom I shall not cut off from my altar shall be spared to weep his eyes out to grieve his heart, and all the descendants of your house shall die by the sword of men. NIV 33 Every one of you that I do not cut off from my altar will be spared only to blind your eyes with tears and to grieve your heart, and all your descendants will die in the prime of life. ESV 34 And this that shall come upon your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, shall be the sign to you: both of them shall die on the same day. NIV 34 " 'And what happens to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will be a sign to you--they will both die on the same day. ESV 35 And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind. And I will build him a sure house, and he shall go in and out before my anointed forever. NIV 35 I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. I will firmly establish his house, and he will minister before my anointed one always. ESV 36 And everyone who is left in your house shall come to implore him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread and shall say, "Please put me in one of the priests' places, that I may eat a morsel of bread."'" NIV 36 Then everyone left in your family line will come and bow down before him for a piece of silver and a crust of bread and plead, "Appoint me to some priestly office so I can have food to eat." ' "
