1 Thessalonians 3:1-5

RSV 1 Therefore when we could bear it no longer, we were willing to be left behind at Athens alone, NIV 1 So when we could stand it no longer, we thought it best to be left by ourselves in Athens. RSV 2 and we sent Timothy, our brother and God's servant in the gospel of Christ, to establish you in your faith and to exhort you, NIV 2 We sent Timothy, who is our brother and God's fellow worker in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith, RSV 3 that no one be moved by these afflictions. You yourselves know that this is to be our lot. NIV 3 so that no one would be unsettled by these trials. You know quite well that we were destined for them. RSV 4 For when we were with you, we told you beforehand that we were to suffer affliction; just as it has come to pass, and as you know. NIV 4 In fact, when we were with you, we kept telling you that we would be persecuted. And it turned out that way, as you well know. RSV 5 For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent that I might know your faith, for fear that somehow the tempter had tempted you and that our labor would be in vain. NIV 5 For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith. I was afraid that in some way the tempter might have tempted you and our efforts might have been useless.
