1 Thessalonians 5

CEB 1 We don't need to write to you about the timing and dates, brothers and sisters. NIV 1 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, CEB 2 You know very well that the day of the Lord is going to come like a thief in the night. NIV 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. CEB 3 When they are saying, "There is peace and security," at that time sudden destruction will attack them, like labor pains start with a pregnant woman, and they definitely won't escape. NIV 3 While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. CEB 4 But you aren't in darkness, brothers and sisters, so the day won't catch you by surprise like a thief. NIV 4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. CEB 5 All of you are children of light and children of the day. We don't belong to night or darkness. NIV 5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. CEB 6 So then, let's not sleep like the others, but let's stay awake and stay sober. NIV 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. CEB 7 People who sleep sleep at night, and people who get drunk get drunk at night. NIV 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. CEB 8 Since we belong to the day, let's stay sober, wearing faithfulness and love as a piece of armor that protects our body and the hope of salvation as a helmet. NIV 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. CEB 9 God didn't intend for us to suffer his wrath but rather to possess salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. CEB 10 Jesus died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with him. NIV 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. CEB 11 So continue encouraging each other and building each other up, just like you are doing already. NIV 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. CEB 12 Brothers and sisters, we ask you to respect those who are working with you, leading you, and instructing you. NIV 12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. CEB 13 Think of them highly with love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. NIV 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. CEB 14 Brothers and sisters, we urge you to warn those who are disorderly. Comfort the discouraged. Help the weak. Be patient with everyone. NIV 14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. CEB 15 Make sure no one repays a wrong with a wrong, but always pursue the good for each other and everyone else. NIV 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else. CEB 16 Rejoice always. NIV 16 Be joyful always; CEB 17 Pray continually. NIV 17 pray continually; CEB 18 Give thanks in every situation because this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. NIV 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. CEB 19 Don't suppress the Spirit. NIV 19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire; CEB 20 Don't brush off Spirit-inspired messages, NIV 20 do not treat prophecies with contempt. CEB 21 but examine everything carefully and hang on to what is good. NIV 21 Test everything. Hold on to the good. CEB 22 Avoid every kind of evil. NIV 22 Avoid every kind of evil. CEB 23 Now, may the God of peace himself cause you to be completely dedicated to him; and may your spirit, soul, and body be kept intact and blameless at our Lord Jesus Christ's coming. NIV 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. CEB 24 The one who is calling you is faithful and will do this. NIV 24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it. CEB 25 Brothers and sisters, pray for us. NIV 25 Brothers, pray for us. CEB 26 Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss. NIV 26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. CEB 27 By the Lord's authority, I order all of you to have this letter read aloud to all the brothers and sisters. NIV 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers. CEB 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you. NIV 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
