1 Thessalonians 5

NCV 1 Now, brothers and sisters, we do not need to write you about times and dates. NIV 1 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, NCV 2 You know very well that the day the Lord comes again will be a surprise, like a thief that comes in the night. NIV 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. NCV 3 While people are saying, "We have peace and we are safe," they will be destroyed quickly. It is like pains that come quickly to a woman having a baby. Those people will not escape. NIV 3 While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. NCV 4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not living in darkness, and so that day will not surprise you like a thief. NIV 4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. NCV 5 You are all people who belong to the light and to the day. We do not belong to the night or to darkness. NIV 5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. NCV 6 So we should not be like other people who are sleeping, but we should be alert and have self-control. NIV 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. NCV 7 Those who sleep, sleep at night. Those who get drunk, get drunk at night. NIV 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. NCV 8 But we belong to the day, so we should control ourselves. We should wear faith and love to protect us, and the hope of salvation should be our helmet. NIV 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. NCV 9 God did not choose us to suffer his anger but to have salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. NCV 10 Jesus died for us so that we can live together with him, whether we are alive or dead when he comes. NIV 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. NCV 11 So encourage each other and give each other strength, just as you are doing now. NIV 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. NCV 12 Now, brothers and sisters, we ask you to appreciate those who work hard among you, who lead you in the Lord and teach you. NIV 12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. NCV 13 Respect them with a very special love because of the work they do. Live in peace with each other. NIV 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. NCV 14 We ask you, brothers and sisters, to warn those who do not work. Encourage the people who are afraid. Help those who are weak. Be patient with everyone. NIV 14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. NCV 15 Be sure that no one pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to do what is good for each other and for all people. NIV 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else. NCV 16 Always be joyful. NIV 16 Be joyful always; NCV 17 Pray continually, NIV 17 pray continually; NCV 18 and give thanks whatever happens. That is what God wants for you in Christ Jesus. NIV 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. NCV 19 Do not hold back the work of the Holy Spirit. NIV 19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire; NCV 20 Do not treat prophecy as if it were unimportant. NIV 20 do not treat prophecies with contempt. NCV 21 But test everything. Keep what is good, NIV 21 Test everything. Hold on to the good. NCV 22 and stay away from everything that is evil. NIV 22 Avoid every kind of evil. NCV 23 Now may God himself, the God of peace, make you pure, belonging only to him. May your whole self -- spirit, soul, and body -- be kept safe and without fault when our Lord Jesus Christ comes. NIV 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. NCV 24 You can trust the One who calls you to do that for you. NIV 24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it. NCV 25 Brothers and sisters, pray for us. NIV 25 Brothers, pray for us. NCV 26 Give each other a holy kiss when you meet. NIV 26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. NCV 27 I tell you by the authority of the Lord to read this letter to all the believers. NIV 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers. NCV 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. NIV 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
