1 Timothy 4

ASV 1 But the Spirit saith expressly, that in later times some shall fall away from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons, NIV 1 The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. ASV 2 through the hypocrisy of men that speak lies, branded in their own conscience as with a hot iron; NIV 2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. ASV 3 forbidding to marry, [and commanding] to abstain from meats, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by them that believe and know the truth. NIV 3 They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. ASV 4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it be received with thanksgiving: NIV 4 For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, ASV 5 for it is sanctified through the word of God and prayer. NIV 5 because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer. ASV 6 If thou put the brethren in mind of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished in the words of the faith, and of the good doctrine which thou hast followed [until now]: NIV 6 If you point these things out to the brothers, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, brought up in the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. ASV 7 but refuse profane and old wives' fables. And exercise thyself unto godliness: NIV 7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. ASV 8 for bodily exercise is profitable for a little; but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life which now is, and of that which is to come. NIV 8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. ASV 9 Faithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptation. NIV 9 This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance ASV 10 For to this end we labor and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of them that believe. NIV 10 (and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe. ASV 11 These things command and teach. NIV 11 Command and teach these things. ASV 12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an ensample to them that believe, in word, in manner of life, in love, in faith, in purity. NIV 12 Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. ASV 13 Till I come, give heed to reading, to exhortation, to teaching. NIV 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. ASV 14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. NIV 14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you. ASV 15 Be diligent in these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy progress may be manifest unto all. NIV 15 Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. ASV 16 Take heed to thyself, and to thy teaching. Continue in these things; for in doing this thou shalt save both thyself and them that hear thee. NIV 16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.
