2 Corinthians 8

GNT 1 Our friends, we want you to know what God's grace has accomplished in the churches in Macedonia. NIV 1 And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. GNT 2 They have been severely tested by the troubles they went through; but their joy was so great that they were extremely generous in their giving, even though they are very poor. NIV 2 Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. GNT 3 I can assure you that they gave as much as they could, and even more than they could. Of their own free will NIV 3 For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, GNT 4 they begged us and pleaded for the privilege of having a part in helping God's people in Judea. NIV 4 they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints. GNT 5 It was more than we could have hoped for! First they gave themselves to the Lord; and then, by God's will they gave themselves to us as well. NIV 5 And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God's will. GNT 6 So we urged Titus, who began this work, to continue it and help you complete this special service of love. NIV 6 So we urged Titus, since he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part. GNT 7 You are so rich in all you have: in faith, speech, and knowledge, in your eagerness to help and in your love for us. And so we want you to be generous also in this service of love. NIV 7 But just as you excel in everything--in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us--see that you also excel in this grace of giving. GNT 8 I am not laying down any rules. But by showing how eager others are to help, I am trying to find out how real your own love is. NIV 8 I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. GNT 9 You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ; rich as he was, he made himself poor for your sake, in order to make you rich by means of his poverty. NIV 9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. GNT 10 My opinion is that it is better for you to finish now what you began last year. You were the first, not only to act, but also to be willing to act. NIV 10 And here is my advice about what is best for you in this matter: Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so. GNT 11 On with it, then, and finish the job! Be as eager to finish it as you were to plan it, and do it with what you now have. NIV 11 Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. GNT 12 If you are eager to give, God will accept your gift on the basis of what you have to give, not on what you don't have. NIV 12 For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have. GNT 13 I am not trying to relieve others by putting a burden on you; but since you have plenty at this time, it is only fair that you should help those who are in need. Then, when you are in need and they have plenty, they will help you. In this way both are treated equally. NIV 13 Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. GNT 15 As the scripture says, "The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little." NIV 15 as it is written: "He who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little did not have too little." GNT 16 How we thank God for making Titus as eager as we are to help you! NIV 16 I thank God, who put into the heart of Titus the same concern I have for you. GNT 17 Not only did he welcome our request; he was so eager to help that of his own free will he decided to go to you. NIV 17 For Titus not only welcomed our appeal, but he is coming to you with much enthusiasm and on his own initiative. GNT 18 With him we are sending the brother who is highly respected in all the churches for his work in preaching the gospel. NIV 18 And we are sending along with him the brother who is praised by all the churches for his service to the gospel. GNT 19 And besides that, he has been chosen and appointed by the churches to travel with us as we carry out this service of love for the sake of the Lord's glory and in order to show that we want to help. NIV 19 What is more, he was chosen by the churches to accompany us as we carry the offering, which we administer in order to honor the Lord himself and to show our eagerness to help. GNT 20 We are being careful not to stir up any complaints about the way we handle this generous gift. NIV 20 We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer this liberal gift. GNT 21 Our purpose is to do what is right, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of others. NIV 21 For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of men. GNT 22 So we are sending our brother with them; we have tested him many times and found him always very eager to help. And now that he has so much confidence in you, he is all the more eager to help. NIV 22 In addition, we are sending with them our brother who has often proved to us in many ways that he is zealous, and now even more so because of his great confidence in you. GNT 23 As for Titus, he is my partner and works with me to help you; as for the other brothers who are going with him, they represent the churches and bring glory to Christ. NIV 23 As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker among you; as for our brothers, they are representatives of the churches and an honor to Christ. GNT 24 Show your love to them, so that all the churches will be sure of it and know that we are right in boasting about you. NIV 24 Therefore show these men the proof of your love and the reason for our pride in you, so that the churches can see it.
