2 Timothy 1

DBY 1 Paul, apostle of Jesus Christ by God's will, according to promise of life, the [life] which [is] in Christ Jesus, NIV 1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, DBY 2 to Timotheus, [my] beloved child: grace, mercy, peace, from God [the] Father, and Christ Jesus our Lord. NIV 2 To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. DBY 3 I am thankful to God, whom I serve from [my] forefathers with pure conscience, how unceasingly I have the remembrance of thee in my supplications night and day, NIV 3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. DBY 4 earnestly desiring to see thee, remembering thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; NIV 4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. DBY 5 calling to mind the unfeigned faith which [has been] in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and in thy mother Eunice, and I am persuaded that in thee also. NIV 5 I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. DBY 6 For which cause I put thee in mind to rekindle the gift of God which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. NIV 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. DBY 7 For God has not given us a spirit of cowardice, but of power, and of love, and of wise discretion. NIV 7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. DBY 8 Be not therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner; but suffer evil along with the glad tidings, according to the power of God; NIV 8 So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, DBY 9 who has saved us, and has called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to [his] own purpose and grace, which [was] given to us in Christ Jesus before [the] ages of time, NIV 9 who has saved us and called us to a holy life--not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, DBY 10 but has been made manifest now by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who has annulled death, and brought to light life and incorruptibility by the glad tidings; NIV 10 but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. DBY 11 to which *I* have been appointed a herald and apostle and teacher of [the] nations. NIV 11 And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. DBY 12 For which cause also I suffer these things; but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep for that day the deposit I have entrusted to him. NIV 12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day. DBY 13 Have an outline of sound words, which [words] thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which [are] in Christ Jesus. NIV 13 What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. DBY 14 Keep, by the Holy Spirit which dwells in us, the good deposit entrusted. NIV 14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you--guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. DBY 15 Thou knowest this, that all who [are] in Asia, of whom is Phygellus and Hermogenes, have turned away from me. NIV 15 You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes. DBY 16 The Lord grant mercy to the house of Onesiphorus, for he has often refreshed me, and has not been ashamed of my chain; NIV 16 May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains. DBY 17 but being in Rome sought me out very diligently, and found [me] -- NIV 17 On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me. DBY 18 the Lord grant to him to find mercy from [the] Lord in that day -- and how much service he rendered in Ephesus *thou* knowest best. NIV 18 May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on that day! You know very well in how many ways he helped me in Ephesus.
