NIV

1 And the word of Yahweh {came} to me, {saying},
1 The word of the LORD came to me:
2 "Son of man, tell a riddle and quote a proverb to the house of Israel,
2 “Son of man, set forth an allegory and tell it to the Israelites as a parable.
3 and you must say, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "{The great eagle with great wings and long feathers} [and] {full of variegated plumage} came to Lebanon and he took the treetop of the cedar.
3 Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: A great eagle with powerful wings, long feathers and full plumage of varied colors came to Lebanon. Taking hold of the top of a cedar,
4 He plucked the top of its new plant shoot, and he brought it to the land of Canaan [and] put it in a city of merchants,
4 he broke off its topmost shoot and carried it away to a land of merchants, where he planted it in a city of traders.
5 and he took from the seed of the land and placed it in {fertile soil} on many waters; [like] a willow he planted it.
5 “ ‘He took one of the seedlings of the land and put it in fertile soil. He planted it like a willow by abundant water,
6 And it sprouted, and {it became a vine spreading out}, low of height, turning its branches to him, and its roots were under it, and {it became a vine}, and it made branches, and it sent out foliage.
6 and it sprouted and became a low, spreading vine. Its branches turned toward him, but its roots remained under it. So it became a vine and produced branches and put out leafy boughs.
