1 Jesús y Juan el Bautista<br />Cuando Jesús terminó de darles esas instrucciones a los doce discípulos, salió a enseñar y a predicar en las ciudades de toda la región.

After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.
2 Juan el Bautista, quien estaba en prisión, oyó acerca de todas las cosas que hacía el Mesías. Entonces envió a sus discípulos para que le preguntaran a Jesús:

When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples
3 —¿Eres tú el Mesías a quien hemos esperado<br /> o debemos seguir buscando a otro?

to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
4 Jesús les dijo:

Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see:
5 los ciegos ven, los cojos caminan bien, los leprosos son curados, los sordos oyen, los muertos resucitan, y a los pobres se les predica la Buena Noticia.

The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosyare cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.
6 Y díganle: “Dios bendice a los que no se apartan por causa de mí”<br />.

Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”
7 Mientras los discípulos de Juan se iban, Jesús comenzó a hablar acerca de él a las multitudes:

As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind?
8 ¿O esperaban ver a un hombre vestido con ropa costosa? No, la gente que usa ropa costosa vive en los palacios.

If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces.
9 ¿Buscaban a un profeta? Así es, y él es más que un profeta.

Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
10 Juan es el hombre al que se refieren las Escrituras cuando dicen:<br />“Mira, envío a mi mensajero por anticipado,<br />y él preparará el camino delante de ti”<br />.

This is the one about whom it is written: “ ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’
11 »Les digo la verdad, de todos los que han vivido, nadie es superior a Juan el Bautista. Sin embargo, hasta la persona más insignificante en el reino del cielo es superior a él.

Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12 Desde los días en que Juan el Bautista comenzó a predicar hasta ahora, el reino del cielo ha venido avanzando con fuerza, y gente violenta lo está atacando.

From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,and violent people have been raiding it.
13 Pues, antes de que viniera Juan, todos los profetas y la ley de Moisés anunciaban este tiempo;

For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.
14 y si ustedes están dispuestos a aceptar lo que les digo, él es Elías, aquel que los profetas dijeron que vendría.

And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.
15 ¡Todo el que tenga oídos para oír, que escuche y entienda!

Whoever has ears, let them hear.
16 »¿Con qué puedo comparar a esta generación? Se parece a los niños que juegan en la plaza. Se quejan ante sus amigos:

“To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
17 “Tocamos canciones de bodas,<br />y no bailaron;<br />entonces tocamos cantos fúnebres,<br />y no se lamentaron”.

“ ‘We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’
18 »Pues Juan no dedicaba el tiempo a comer y beber, y ustedes dicen: “Está poseído por un demonio”.

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’
19 El Hijo del Hombre,<br /> por su parte, festeja y bebe, y ustedes dicen: “¡Es un glotón y un borracho y es amigo de cobradores de impuestos y de otros pecadores!”. Pero la sabiduría demuestra estar en lo cierto por medio de sus resultados».

The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”
20 Juicio para los incrédulos<br />Luego Jesús comenzó a denunciar a las ciudades en las que había hecho tantos milagros, porque no se habían arrepentido de sus pecados ni se habían vuelto a Dios.

Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent.
21 «¡Qué aflicción les espera, Corazín y Betsaida! Pues, si en las perversas ciudades de Tiro y de Sidón se hubieran hecho los milagros que hice entre ustedes, hace tiempo sus habitantes se habrían arrepentido de sus pecados vistiéndose con ropa de tela áspera y echándose ceniza sobre la cabeza en señal de remordimiento.

“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 Les digo que, el día del juicio, a Tiro y a Sidón les irá mejor que a ustedes.

But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
23 »Y ustedes, los de Capernaúm, ¿serán honrados en el cielo? No, descenderán al lugar de los muertos.<br /> Pues, si hubiera hecho en la perversa ciudad de Sodoma los milagros que hice entre ustedes, la ciudad estaría aquí hasta el día de hoy.

And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.
24 Les digo que, el día del juicio, aun a Sodoma le irá mejor que a ustedes».

But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”
25 Jesús da gracias al Padre<br />En esa ocasión, Jesús hizo la siguiente oración:

At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.
26 Sí, Padre, ¡te agradó hacerlo de esa manera!

Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
27 »Mi Padre me ha confiado todo. Nadie conoce verdaderamente al Hijo excepto el Padre, y nadie conoce verdaderamente al Padre excepto el Hijo y aquellos a quienes el Hijo decide revelarlo».

“All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
28 Luego dijo Jesús:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
29 Pónganse mi yugo. Déjenme enseñarles, porque yo soy humilde y tierno de corazón, y encontrarán descanso para el alma.
29
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 Pues mi yugo es fácil de llevar y la carga que les doy es liviana».

For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
