Acts 1

NAS 1 The first account I composed, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and teach, NIV 1 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach NAS 2 until the day when He was taken up to heaven, after He had by the Holy Spirit given orders to the apostles whom He had chosen. NIV 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. NAS 3 To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God. NIV 3 After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. NAS 4 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, "Which," He said, "you heard of from Me; NIV 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. NAS 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now ." NIV 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." NAS 6 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, "Lord , is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?" NIV 6 So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" NAS 7 He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; NIV 7 He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. NAS 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth." NIV 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." NAS 9 And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. NIV 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. NAS 10 And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them. NIV 10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. NAS 11 They also said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven." NIV 11 "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven." NAS 12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away. NIV 12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day's walk from the city. NAS 13 When they had entered the city, they went up to the upper room where they were staying; that is, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James. NIV 13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. NAS 14 These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. NIV 14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. NAS 15 At this time Peter stood up in the midst of the brethren (a gathering of about one hundred and twenty persons was there together ), and said, NIV 15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) NAS 16 "Brethren , the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. NIV 16 and said, "Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus-- NAS 17 "For he was counted among us and received his share in this ministry." NIV 17 he was one of our number and shared in this ministry." NAS 18 (Now this man acquired a field with the price of his wickedness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out. NIV 18 (With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. NAS 19 And it became known to all who were living in Jerusalem; so that in their own language that field was called Hakeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) NIV 19 Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) NAS 20 "For it is written in the book of Psalms, 'LET HIS HOMESTEAD BE MADE DESOLATE, AND LET NO ONE DWELL IN IT'; and, 'LET ANOTHER MAN TAKE HIS OFFICE.' NIV 20 "For," said Peter, "it is written in the book of Psalms, " 'May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,' and, " 'May another take his place of leadership.' NAS 21 "Therefore it is necessary that of the men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us- NIV 21 Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, NAS 22 beginning with the baptism of John until the day that He was taken up from us-one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection." NIV 22 beginning from John's baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection." NAS 23 So they put forward two men, Joseph called Barsabbas (who was also called Justus ), and Matthias. NIV 23 So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. NAS 24 And they prayed and said, "You, Lord , who know the hearts of all men, show which one of these two You have chosen NIV 24 Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen NAS 25 to occupy this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place." NIV 25 to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs." NAS 26 And they drew lots for them, and the lot fell to Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles. NIV 26 Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.
