NIV 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. NRS 3 After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. NIV 3 After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. NRS 6 So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?" NIV 6 So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" NRS 7 He replied, "It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. NIV 7 He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. NRS 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." NIV 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." NRS 9 When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. NIV 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. NRS 10 While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. NIV 10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. NRS 11 They said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven." NIV 11 "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven." NRS 12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day's journey away. NIV 12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day's walk from the city. NRS 13 When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. NIV 13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. NRS 14 All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers. NIV 14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. NRS 15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred twenty persons) and said, NIV 15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) NRS 16 "Friends, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus— NIV 16 and said, "Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus-- NRS 17 for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry." NRS 18 (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. NIV 18 (With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. NRS 19 This became known to all the residents of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their language Hakeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) NIV 19 Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) NRS 20 "For it is written in the book of Psalms, "Let his homestead become desolate, and let there be no one to live in it'; and "Let another take his position of overseer.' NIV 20 "For," said Peter, "it is written in the book of Psalms, " 'May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,' and, " 'May another take his place of leadership.' NIV 22 beginning from John's baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection." NRS 23 So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. NIV 23 So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. NRS 24 Then they prayed and said, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen NIV 24 Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen NRS 25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place." NIV 25 to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs." NRS 26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles. NIV 26 Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.
