CEB 1 There was a man in Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion in the Italian Company. NIV 1 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment. CEB 2 He and his whole household were pious, Gentile God-worshippers. He gave generously to those in need among the Jewish people and prayed to God constantly. CEB 4 Startled, he stared at the angel and replied, "What is it, Lord?" The angel said, "Your prayers and your compassionate acts are like a memorial offering to God. NIV 4 Cornelius stared at him in fear. "What is it, Lord?" he asked. The angel answered, "Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. CEB 5 Send messengers to Joppa at once and summon a certain Simon, the one known as Peter. NIV 5 Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. CEB 6 He is a guest of Simon the tanner, whose house is near the seacoast." NIV 6 He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea." CEB 7 When the angel who was speaking to him had gone, Cornelius summoned two of his household servants along with a pious soldier from his personal staff. NIV 13 Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat." CEB 14 Peter exclaimed, "Absolutely not, Lord! I have never eaten anything impure or unclean." NIV 14 "Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have never eaten anything impure or unclean." CEB 15 The voice spoke a second time, "Never consider unclean what God has made pure." NIV 15 The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean." CEB 16 This happened three times, then the object was suddenly pulled back into heaven. NIV 16 This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven. CEB 17 Peter was bewildered about the meaning of the vision. Just then, the messengers sent by Cornelius discovered the whereabouts of Simon's house and arrived at the gate. NIV 17 While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon's house was and stopped at the gate. CEB 18 Calling out, they inquired whether the Simon known as Peter was a guest there. NIV 18 They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there. CEB 19 While Peter was brooding over the vision, the Spirit interrupted him, "Look! Three people are looking for you. NIV 19 While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Simon, three men are looking for you. CEB 20 Go downstairs. Don't ask questions; just go with them because I have sent them." NIV 20 So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them." CEB 21 So Peter went downstairs and told them, "I'm the one you are looking for. Why have you come?" NIV 21 Peter went down and said to the men, "I'm the one you're looking for. Why have you come?" CEB 22 They replied, "We've come on behalf of Cornelius, a centurion and righteous man, a God-worshipper who is well-respected by all Jewish people. A holy angel directed him to summon you to his house and to hear what you have to say." NIV 22 The men replied, "We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to have you come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say." CEB 23 Peter invited them into the house as his guests. The next day he got up and went with them, together with some of the believers from Joppa. NIV 23 Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests. The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa went along. CEB 24 They arrived in Caesarea the following day. Anticipating their arrival, Cornelius had gathered his relatives and close friends. NIV 24 The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. CEB 25 As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in order to honor him. However, God has shown me that I should never call a person impure or unclean. NIV 28 He said to them: "You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with a Gentile or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean. CEB 29 For this reason, when you sent for me, I came without objection. I want to know, then, why you sent for me." NIV 29 So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?" CEB 30 Cornelius answered, "Four days ago at this same time, three o'clock in the afternoon, I was praying at home. Suddenly a man in radiant clothing stood before me. NIV 30 Cornelius answered: "Four days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me CEB 31 He said, ‘Cornelius, God has heard your prayers, and your compassionate acts are like a memorial offering to him. NIV 31 and said, 'Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor. CEB 32 Therefore, send someone to Joppa and summon Simon, who is known as Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, located near the seacoast.' NIV 32 Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.' CEB 33 I sent for you right away, and you were kind enough to come. Now, here we are, gathered in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has directed you to say." NIV 33 So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us." CEB 34 Peter said, "I really am learning that God doesn't show partiality to one group of people over another. NIV 34 Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism CEB 35 Rather, in every nation, whoever worships him and does what is right is acceptable to him. NIV 35 but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right. CEB 36 This is the message of peace he sent to the Israelites by proclaiming the good news through Jesus Christ: He is Lord of all! NIV 36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. CEB 37 You know what happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism John preached. Jesus traveled around doing good and healing everyone oppressed by the devil because God was with him. CEB 39 We are witnesses of everything he did, both in Judea and in Jerusalem. NIV 47 "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have." CEB 48 He directed that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited Peter to stay for several days. NIV 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.
