Acts 10

RSV 1 At Caesare'a there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of what was known as the Italian Cohort, NIV 1 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment. RSV 2 a devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms liberally to the people, and prayed constantly to God. NIV 2 He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. RSV 3 About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, "Cornelius." NIV 3 One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, "Cornelius!" RSV 4 And he stared at him in terror, and said, "What is it, Lord?" And he said to him, "Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God. NIV 4 Cornelius stared at him in fear. "What is it, Lord?" he asked. The angel answered, "Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. RSV 5 And now send men to Joppa, and bring one Simon who is called Peter; NIV 5 Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. RSV 6 he is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the seaside." NIV 6 He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea." RSV 7 When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those that waited on him, NIV 7 When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants. RSV 8 and having related everything to them, he sent them to Joppa. NIV 8 He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa. RSV 9 The next day, as they were on their journey and coming near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour. NIV 9 About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. RSV 10 And he became hungry and desired something to eat; but while they were preparing it, he fell into a trance NIV 10 He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. RSV 11 and saw the heaven opened, and something descending, like a great sheet, let down by four corners upon the earth. NIV 11 He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. RSV 12 In it were all kinds of animals and reptiles and birds of the air. NIV 12 It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. RSV 13 And there came a voice to him, "Rise, Peter; kill and eat." NIV 13 Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat." RSV 14 But Peter said, "No, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean." NIV 14 "Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have never eaten anything impure or unclean." RSV 15 And the voice came to him again a second time, "What God has cleansed, you must not call common." NIV 15 The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean." RSV 16 This happened three times, and the thing was taken up at once to heaven. NIV 16 This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven. RSV 17 Now while Peter was inwardly perplexed as to what the vision which he had seen might mean, behold, the men that were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon's house, stood before the gate NIV 17 While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon's house was and stopped at the gate. RSV 18 and called out to ask whether Simon who was called Peter was lodging there. NIV 18 They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there. RSV 19 And while Peter was pondering the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Behold, three men are looking for you. NIV 19 While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Simon, three men are looking for you. RSV 20 Rise and go down, and accompany them without hesitation; for I have sent them." NIV 20 So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them." RSV 21 And Peter went down to the men and said, "I am the one you are looking for; what is the reason for your coming?" NIV 21 Peter went down and said to the men, "I'm the one you're looking for. Why have you come?" RSV 22 And they said, "Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house, and to hear what you have to say." NIV 22 The men replied, "We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to have you come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say." RSV 23 So he called them in to be his guests. The next day he rose and went off with them, and some of the brethren from Joppa accompanied him. NIV 23 Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests. The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa went along. RSV 24 And on the following day they entered Caesare'a. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his kinsmen and close friends. NIV 24 The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. RSV 25 When Peter entered, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. NIV 25 As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence. RSV 26 But Peter lifted him up, saying, "Stand up; I too am a man." NIV 26 But Peter made him get up. "Stand up," he said, "I am only a man myself." RSV 27 And as he talked with him, he went in and found many persons gathered; NIV 27 Talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people. RSV 28 and he said to them, "You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with or to visit any one of another nation; but God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean. NIV 28 He said to them: "You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with a Gentile or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean. RSV 29 So when I was sent for, I came without objection. I ask then why you sent for me." NIV 29 So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?" RSV 30 And Cornelius said, "Four days ago, about this hour, I was keeping the ninth hour of prayer in my house; and behold, a man stood before me in bright apparel, NIV 30 Cornelius answered: "Four days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me RSV 31 saying, 'Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God. NIV 31 and said, 'Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor. RSV 32 Send therefore to Joppa and ask for Simon who is called Peter; he is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the seaside.' NIV 32 Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.' RSV 33 So I sent to you at once, and you have been kind enough to come. Now therefore we are all here present in the sight of God, to hear all that you have been commanded by the Lord." NIV 33 So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us." RSV 34 And Peter opened his mouth and said: "Truly I perceive that God shows no partiality, NIV 34 Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism RSV 35 but in every nation any one who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. NIV 35 but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right. RSV 36 You know the word which he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace by Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), NIV 36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. RSV 37 the word which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: NIV 37 You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached-- RSV 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. NIV 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. RSV 39 And we are witnesses to all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; NIV 39 "We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree, RSV 40 but God raised him on the third day and made him manifest; NIV 40 but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. RSV 41 not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. NIV 41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen--by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. RSV 42 And he commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that he is the one ordained by God to be judge of the living and the dead. NIV 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. RSV 43 To him all the prophets bear witness that every one who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." NIV 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." RSV 44 While Peter was still saying this, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. NIV 44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. RSV 45 And the believers from among the circumcised who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. NIV 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. RSV 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, NIV 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, RSV 47 "Can any one forbid water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" NIV 47 "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have." RSV 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days. NIV 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.
