Acts 13:16-41

RSV 16 So Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said: "Men of Israel, and you that fear God, listen. NIV 16 Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand and said: "Men of Israel and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me! RSV 17 The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it. NIV 17 The God of the people of Israel chose our fathers; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt, with mighty power he led them out of that country, RSV 18 And for about forty years he bore with them in the wilderness. NIV 18 he endured their conduct for about forty years in the desert, RSV 19 And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance, for about four hundred and fifty years. NIV 19 he overthrew seven nations in Canaan and gave their land to his people as their inheritance. RSV 20 And after that he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. NIV 20 All this took about 450 years. "After this, God gave them judges until the time of Samuel the prophet. RSV 21 Then they asked for a king; and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. NIV 21 Then the people asked for a king, and he gave them Saul son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled forty years. RSV 22 And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king; of whom he testified and said, 'I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.' NIV 22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. He testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.' RSV 23 Of this man's posterity God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised. NIV 23 "From this man's descendants God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as he promised. RSV 24 Before his coming John had preached a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. NIV 24 Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel. RSV 25 And as John was finishing his course, he said, 'What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.' NIV 25 As John was completing his work, he said: 'Who do you think I am? I am not that one. No, but he is coming after me, whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.' RSV 26 "Brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you that fear God, to us has been sent the message of this salvation. NIV 26 "Brothers, children of Abraham, and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent. RSV 27 For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize him nor understand the utterances of the prophets which are read every sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning him. NIV 27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. RSV 28 Though they could charge him with nothing deserving death, yet they asked Pilate to have him killed. NIV 28 Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. RSV 29 And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a tomb. NIV 29 When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. RSV 30 But God raised him from the dead; NIV 30 But God raised him from the dead, RSV 31 and for many days he appeared to those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people. NIV 31 and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people. RSV 32 And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers, NIV 32 "We tell you the good news: What God promised our fathers RSV 33 this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus; as also it is written in the second psalm, 'Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee.' NIV 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: " 'You are my Son; today I have become your Father. ' RSV 34 And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, he spoke in this way, 'I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.' NIV 34 The fact that God raised him from the dead, never to decay, is stated in these words: " 'I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.' RSV 35 Therefore he says also in another psalm, 'Thou wilt not let thy Holy One see corruption.' NIV 35 So it is stated elsewhere: " 'You will not let your Holy One see decay.' RSV 36 For David, after he had served the counsel of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid with his fathers, and saw corruption; NIV 36 "For when David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed. RSV 37 but he whom God raised up saw no corruption. NIV 37 But the one whom God raised from the dead did not see decay. RSV 38 Let it be known to you therefore, brethren, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, NIV 38 "Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. RSV 39 and by him every one that believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses. NIV 39 Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses. RSV 40 Beware, therefore, lest there come upon you what is said in the prophets: NIV 40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you: RSV 41 'Behold, you scoffers, and wonder, and perish; for I do a deed in your days, a deed you will never believe, if one declares it to you.'" NIV 41 " 'Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you.' "
