Acts 17:22-31

RSV 22 So Paul, standing in the middle of the Are-op'agus, said: "Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. NIV 22 Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: "Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. RSV 23 For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, 'To an unknown god.' What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. NIV 23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you. RSV 24 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by man, NIV 24 "The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. RSV 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all men life and breath and everything. NIV 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. RSV 26 And he made from one every nation of men to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their habitation, NIV 26 From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. RSV 27 that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel after him and find him. Yet he is not far from each one of us, NIV 27 God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. RSV 28 for 'In him we live and move and have our being'; as even some of your poets have said, 'For we are indeed his offspring.' NIV 28 'For in him we live and move and have our being.' As some of your own poets have said, 'We are his offspring.' RSV 29 Being then God's offspring, we ought not to think that the Deity is like gold, or silver, or stone, a representation by the art and imagination of man. NIV 29 "Therefore since we are God's offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone--an image made by man's design and skill. RSV 30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all men everywhere to repent, NIV 30 In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. RSV 31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all men by raising him from the dead." NIV 31 For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead."
